Hi everyone,
After hearing about the known heat issues with the nVidia 8400m card I started monitoring the temperatures on my laptop using SpeedFan. The temperatures remain pretty consistent albeit on the high side .
They are as follow:
GPU: 65C
Core 0: 55C
Core 1: 55C
These are averages they really dont get much higher (at least for too long). When the fan turns on they drop about 5C (and go back up when it turns off). I bought my laptop back in March (actually very happy with it) and have had no real problems (fingers crossed). I mostly use Office, surf the internet & watch movies no real hardcore gaming for me
Anyone think these temperatures are normal?
Should I call Dell?
Will all these video cards ultimately fail?

again, high temp != bad card, though high temp is bad....
i woudl say they are bad if thoer are idle temps, especialyl the processors.... think about more warranty?
think about undervolting the processors.... save battery and heat -
they are perffectly normal, dont worry
-
These temps are fine, most mobile CPU/GPU's are designed to handle temps well into the 80s or more for an extended period of time.
-
dont worry the temps look good.
-
thx everyone - I guess I'll just keep an eye on it.......
Extending the warranty might be a good idea - I'll do some research on it. Though, if theres a known issue with these cards- I think Dell should extend the warranty on them regardless of what plan you have.
One more question- can change your fan settings? -
"These temps are fine, most mobile CPU/GPU's are designed to handle temps well into the 80s or more for an extended period of time"
Sure, the sentence must be a joke. Thats why the last dell technician told me that alot of M1330 and M1530 laptops still die because of the GPU which cant handle the temperatures. -
but thats just because some GPUs are faulty, but in a normal GPU it can run at 90C without a problem, reaching 100C can start to damage it, when it reaches 115 the computer will shut off..
-
For what its worth - I downloaded Bios A12 and my system is running a few degrees cooler...
I'm not sure if any mods are necessary at this point (it also might void the warranty). From what I read so far, if I have a bad card it will crash regardless of what I do. Most users have said these cards spontaneously heat-up and die .
I guess the only answer is to extend the warranty . -
Those temps are normal
My Vostro 1510 has a similar heatsink/fan combo and I get temperatures like that
Core0/1: 55c
GPU: ~60c
My proc will heat up to 57-59 or so, the fan will bring it down to 53c or so and it repeats the cycle.
Normal. -
Yep normal temperatures. The GPU's handle heat very well up to a certain point and then they .... don't handle it very well
From the research I've done the G84M can handle temps very well into the 80's and as it hits 90 and above it's terrible. All GPU's will have a temperature threshold. As far as lifespan goes , If you're topping in the low to mid 80's your GPU will be fine. The problem was that some GPU's were spiking above that and the G84 does not do well at those temperatures even for brief periods of time. -
WOW
I called Dell this past week just curious really and told them that I thought my laptop was running a bit hot. I know everyone has stated in this thread that the temps are perfectly normal but the Dell technician thought otherwise. I really wasnt even pushing the matter but they order a new motherboard and heat sink assembly for my system. Again, my system was working fine aside from the heat issue.
The technician installed everything today and my CPU is now idling about 47-49C (can spike to about 63C every so often upon which the fan kicks in). My GPU idles about 52C and can spike to about 67C (until the fan kicks in). This is definitely an improvement.
Its almost an admission of guilt I suppose I know its the GPUs that cause the problem but I think Dell wants to put the matter behind them. I hope my new motherboard and heat sink has addressed any previous known faults.
Also, the tech rebooted Bios 11 (I had previous downloaded Bios 12). When I asked why not download the newest version he said this is the one that works best for my system.
I am very impressed with the level of service I got from Dell & will probably extend my warranty -
Advice would be appreciated, I would like very much to have an experience similar to yours. -
Glad it worked out for ya. XPS product line has better support and they take care of things right away. I had a problem with A12 and reverted back to A11. The main problem with A12 is that the wireless wouldn't wake up after hibernation and didn't notice any improvement with the signal.

Brisken - your max temps are definitely too high Even before I had the replacement done, my temps never exceeded 80C .
When I called Dell I specifically remember telling them that it must be a hardware issue not a Bios issue or anything else. Funny - the rep initially told me to get a laptop cooler!!! I was put on hold and before too long the rep said they would order some parts & that a tech would come to my house. I had no idea what they would send and only later did I find out they issued a complete replacement .
I forgot too mention but they upgraded my video card to the 8600M GT (I initially had the 8400m) when they replaced my motherboard. I didnt ask for this and maybe thats all they had at the time (Ill update my sig)
Again really impressed with the service
