With all the fuss about the 8 series GPU's being defective, I think it would be helpful if we got a poll of exactly how many people are fine, and how many people have had their gpu's actually fail on them...

May be you should also add another option "I have a warranty running + extra 12 mo. ltd warranty for the GPU, so I am not worried."

I think most of us do, didn't dell extend everyone's warranty?

I picked "No, but the temps bother me" only because theyve gotten to the point where my GPU started to downclock which made it so I couldnt game.

well yeah they did... but there are people who still are extremely pizzed off and extremely bashful for this issue in-spite of having the warranty... :) so there, it was just a thought to try and get in a better understanding of the general mindset around :) :) and U just have to look at the dell blog for the responses u r seeing.. the posts there make it look as if the world is going to end and as if this extended warranty is a just a dream we r having... thats how it looks :) anyways... :)

I think people are a bit paranoid over the whole thing, I hope this poll helps prove that...

I got a cheap XPS M1330 "for parts or repair" that had a failed GPU then replaced the mobo. I put "no, but the temps bother me" because they do. But I guess I could qualify for "yes, it failed"

I don't think it will because it only polls this forum's users, not the entire XPS community.

Considering that Dell / Dell XPS forums in NBR are the largest among laptop makers, I would imagine a majority of the XPS users are here in NBR... ;) :D :D :D :) :) :) :)

And in any case, it would help people here a lot and by spread of word I am sure it would spread further :)

And oh btw, NBR is *huge* :) :) So there.... :D :D :D

also, most of the users that come here are the ones with issues, so if any, bias should favor failed gpu's...

Ooookay. You're certainly free to imagine what you like. I certainly hope the XPS community turns out to be a lot bigger than the whopping 24 people that have voted so far ;)

It'll be a nice little sample, and I agree it will give others a more visible idea of the "problem's" extent.

Precisely, so your population is already skewed. It'll be a good snapshot, but hardly a statistically significant poll.

There's around 180k members on NBR and the're not all XPS users. I'm not sure how many XPS laptops Dell has shipped but just the Malaysian facitlities alone pumps out around 7.5M laptops a year. Then you have the Irish facilities as well as another location which I can remember right now.

That's a lot of notebooks and even if we estimate 3% of the shipments from Malaysia are XPS systems that's 225K units just for the last year. Factor in the shipments of the 2 other locations and you have a lot of Dell XPS laptops out there.

So even if all NBR members were XPS users it would far from a majority... It's more like a small minority of laptop users frequent notebook related online forums... ;)

I obsessed about my temps for about a week. Did the mod and everything....right now it's running at 48C (yeah it's cold in Chicago too)

So after having this bad boy for a couple of months I can say that I've had no problem (except finding that driver when I went 64bit)

overall I honestly think that yes there was/is a problem with them....but it's not the end of the world that some people make it out to be (like the o' too familiar "OOH NOWWZZZZZ i'm canceling/selling this computer right now")

I voted "no problems" - at least for now (9 months post-purchase).

Although I keep an eye on the temps of both m1330s at home, I am not that much worried, since they are covered till 2011; actually, 2012 with the extra 12 months GPU warranty. By that time, I should be ready for the next lappy and dont really care how many times they end up replacing the mobo...

I would like think 'imaginative' at least for the sake of convincing myself that I am not the only one probably in this gpu mess :D :D :D

Btw, do those #'s include the millions of replacements shipped out or are they just the new, perfect models?? because so many replacements are being shipped out as well as so many are being returned for good, from screwed up customers.. anyway, Whatever :) :D :D

If Dell was shipping millions of replacement notebooks they would be out of business in now time. Or do you have any actual data to showing this?

OP, my GPU is fine and I have absolutely no concerns. I voted that way.

I dont know what scares me more. My GPU frying my mobo or my Xbox 360 giving me the RROD. Either way it sucks to be a consumer in the 21st century.

Ill give my laptop a few weeks to monitor the temps then ill come back and vote.

No, I didn't mean you were wrong or I didn't mean I had actual data.. I was just thinking loud :) and I didn't mean they were shipping millions of replacements notebooks anyways..

LOL... Sorry for laughing... :) It's the "it sucks to be a consumer in the 21st century" comments. Never in mankind history (that we know of) has there been so many choices and so much information available at our fingertips. As long as you wait a little before buying and do you research you can get the best for you money... :D

As for your GPU temp, unless it's off the charts I would not worry about it. :)

Rhodun, it was more of an ironic/sarcasstic remark then anything. i actually have very good luck when it comes to my consumer electronics and all. It's just the paranoia that comes with owning the top of the line high tech that is the concern.

It depends on where you are going... There are many countries around the world, where you can get your "US bought" DELL serviced.

Here at the "official" DELL blog, you can see the mentioning of getting service outside of US for the GPU problem:
    http://direct2dell.com/one2one/default.aspx

    Good luck!

What you fail to realize is that the longer you own the laptop the more likely it is to fail. So since everyone is just buying it or has only had it for one year it's failure rate will definitely rise. I'm saying 2 years from now probably people will start saying it failed. You obviously haven't read up on the nature of the situation. If it wasn't serious Nvidia wouldn't have told dell about it last year.
