Is there anything that can be done about the loud fan when playing games on the XPS M1530? It's so loud it's detracting from the game experience. With earplugs on, I still hear the damn fan very clearly in the background and it's annoying me.

    Anything?

Hmm, I've never heard my laptop over targus cooler and its pretty quiet.

Sounds like you got a bad fan.

the fan is spinning up as fast as it can because the laptop is getting VERY hot.

turning off the fan is a possibility, but it will likely damage your m1530.

best solution is to make the laptop cooler, by getting a laptop cooling pad, turning on the AC in the house, or a combination.

I dont have a cooler or anything like that. My M1530 is fairly quiet when playing games. To be specific, Assasins Creed. I've been playing it many days now at maxed settings 1024 res. Sure the fan does make some noise, but I wouldnt consider it loud. The key is to make sure that if your playing on your lap to not block the intake vent at the bottom.

Sitting a laptop on your lap is the worst thing you can do to it.

I've been doing it all the time. It really isn't the worst thing you could do to it.

Like I said, as long as you arn't blocking the air intake on the bottom, your fine. The M1530 is pretty good on cooling compared to the M1330.

If you don't have the 9-cell battery, and you're gaming on a desk or hard surface, then you could prop the back up with something to raise it off the desk (without covering the fan vent). That allows more air to flow without increasing the fan speed. I just use a dvd case and put it under the battery to lift my laptop up and the fan will run slower and much quieter this way while keeping the notebook cooler.

Invest in isolating headphones if you want to block noise and enhance your gaming experience.
