Have about a month old M1530. And I am experiancing "pitting" on the palmrest where my right hand sits. I keep care of my stuff, almost always wash my hands before using my laptop. I was on on travel for a week, and was unable to be as meticulous as I normally am.

Anyways, got back the other night and cleaned up my laptop using a microfiber cloth. Cleaned up fine, but now I notice that there is some black "dots" (it looks like pitting), right where my right hand sits.

So a few questions, and also just looking for general suggestions. Is the palmrest pure brushed aluminum? And if so, how thick is it? Or is it just a very thin cover, over black plastic? Is that was am I seeing? Is the aluminum wearing away to black plastic?

    Thank you for any info.

Yeah if it gets any worse I am going to have to get it replaced. And I will assume (I will look it up in a second), that the palmrest is probably not to easy to get off (unlike the CPU, which is a dream).

Oh and those protective covers don't have one for the M1530

Try cleaning it with some rubbing alcohol first.

Oh I have. I have tried rubbing booze, an eraser, tape, brasso, SMR 2.0, pretty much in that order. I am a car freak (own a ton of cleaning products), and there has not been much I cannot clean or make look as good as possible (like a surface scratch). But I have not worked much with brushed aluminum.

Well I have a tech coming (should be today or monday), to replace it. I would like to figure out what caused it. I guess I can just cross my fingers and chaulk it up to a bad run of palmrests.

Hey man, after you get the tech support, please post why you got the pitting...cuz im getting the same exact problem but in the left palmrest, i did some research and found that aluminuim, though its metal, is one of the most sensible when it comes to damage by some ions (like chloride) so i found that under certain circumstances sweat can cause this, and it seems logical to me, due to the fact that i use my laptop mostly to play WoW and do some college homework and study, so most of the time my left hand is resting above the left palmrest, while the right one is on the mouse (not the mousepad), hence the lack of pitting on my right palmrest, ive also found that the area where the pitting is located is the exact same area where my palm makes contact with the aluminuim, exactly there is where its getting damaged...so please post

P.D.: sorry for my bad english...not my primary lenguage
No olvides postear por favor, necesito saber que es o que pasa y porque se esta daniando mi laptop! :p

    " Pitting corrosion
Corrosion of aluminum in the passive range is localized, usually manifested by random formation of pits. The pitting potential principle establishes the conditions under which metals in the passive state are subject to corrosion by pitting.

For aluminum, pitting corrosion is most commonly produced by halide ions, of which chloride (Cl -) is the most frequently encountered in service. Pitting of aluminum in halide solutions open to the air occurs because, in the presence of oxygen, the metal is readily polarized to its pitting potential.

Generally, aluminum does not develop pitting in aerated solutions of most nonhalide salts because its pitting potential in these solutions is considerably more noble (cathodic) than in halide solutions and it is not polarized to these potentials in normal service. ..."

I did end up getting it replaced today. Tech really had no idea why it was pitting.

But that is exactly what I was thinking on why/how it would happen. I could have done research like you, but um I am lazy? But seriously, the only time I am gaming is when I have my laptop hooked up to my 24" dell, and I have a keyboard/mouse plugged in. I quit WoW (well I still have my Priest, but he is just sitting there). So I am not really gaming for long period of time.

But, we all know even at idle our M1530's are not the coolest of the bunch. And I do spend ALOT of time after work, just relaxing on the couch doing research and talking smack on here :) My left hand is almost never on the laptop. But I did notice that just surfing I do rest my right hand on the palm rest almost all the time. And of course when I use the touchpad the meat of my right hand is resting on the palmrest.

So we will see what happens with this one. But FYI, Dell had no issues at all replacing it. Told them what was going on, and within 5 minutes they were taking care of sending out a new one.
