What CPU do you have? If you don't have an Intel Extreme Edition processor like the X7800 or X9000 you will not be able to change the multiplier in the BIOS.

You'll have to open up your notebook (Which will void your warranty). Then search for the Clock Generator Chip on the upper side of the motherboard and note down the PLL no. printed on it.

I don't wanna do that, since I bought 5 years of warranty. Is there any other way like setfsb auto tool?
i know overclocking will void my warranty but all i have to do is try to restore it back to default settings before it breaks and they wont even know.

No Auto-Tool etc. SetFSB has very few PLLs. You can try out CPUCool as it has more PLLs that SetFSB. You can try out all of 'em one by one. (Caution -> Overclocking can 'fry' your system) :p

If you bought the 5 year warranty, forget OCing. It`s much better to save money and get an X9000 and OC it to 3.4 :D

I don't see how opening up the notebook will void your warranty as the 1730 GPU upgrade (8800 GTX) was released with Dell anticipating user self-install.

If you decide to open it up, just be careful and follow Dell's steps exactly. They outline the process in the service manual available online.

    Online Service Manual

    Download Service Manual

I personally wouldn't try to OC the CPU, but that's just me... ;)

but the x9000 is like, expensive
and how do i get one? isnt it only when you get a new laptop that you get to choose the x9000? and if it's available separately, where can i buy it? I want to buy it from dell, since its gonna be 100% compatible, but other reliable sources are available. And batboy, how do i set the bios to overclock my cpu on a laptop? pic plz so i know what it looks like, just in case i decide to open it :D Oh, and will any x9000 fit in the m1730? since AW's 8800m gtx is slightly modified than a Dell 8800m gtx

I think you misunderstood my post. As Jstn7477 pointed out, unless you have a Intel Xtreme 7900 or Xtreme 9000 you will not be able to overclock the CPU in the BIOS. Dell only supports overclocking of the Xtreme processors.

Any X9000 will fit. Your best bet is to purchase from a reputable seller. Be cautious with eBay.

Dell has it but their price is plain crazy... LOL check it out:

    $1691.49

Not sure what you mean with comparing the Alienware 8800M GTX to the Dell 8800M GTX. Thought we were talking about CPUs... For the M1730, only a Dell 8800M GTX SLI Upgrade card will fit. Any other 8800M GTX will not as Dell has their own specific design (as far as I know, all manufacturers do).

Only Dell uses proprietary modules...most of the other system builders or manufacturers started using MXM ...
