Just received this XPS 17 laptop. I plug headphones into either jack (not sure what SP/DIF one is supposed to do) and all that happens is that I get sound from my speakers.

Nothing new shows up under sound playback devices (though I didn't think anything ever did from a minijack).

G35 headset works fine but obviously that's USB.

Then I tried the same on my wife's laptop - also same thing...nothing happens when plugging headphones into minijack.

Both of us have installed the XIFI MB software, for what it's worth.

E: Which also seems to mean we can't bring up the Realtek HD Audio Manager (via the far-right button that lights up at the top). Uninstalled and reinstalled that Realtek software, but it still doesn't do crap on bootup other than show some empty screen that says "Realtek by Dell" or something.

Not sure if these issues are related.

It is related. I had the same problem. First try installing the latest Dell Realtek driver. I ended up doing a factory restore to get it working, but I think it was the new driver that really fixed it.

I did install the only sound driver listed for the XPS 17 on Dell's site, but as stated, that doesn't make the "Audio Manager" actually function, at least software wise. Can you actually load Audio Manager and see your options?

Maybe I need to remove the Xi-Fi thing that I installed first?

    Pretty ridiculous.

Well what do you know, I uninstalled Xi-Fi and now Realtek Audio Manager shows up. Going to be asking for $20x2 back real soon once I verify this issue.

OK, reinstalled X-Fi on top of the latest Dell drivers and now it's all in good order.

    So in conclusion:

Remove Dell drivers and X-Fi if you had them installed

    Install new Dell Drivers

    Then install X-Fi
