Got my XPS1640 back in June, undervolted it and never had any temperature problems and it has performed greatly. However, a few days ago I updated the GPU, bios and cpu ( i think) drivers to be more up-to-date. Got A11 (was A08) and used mobility modder for the new ATI driver.
Since then however I have had problems. CPU temperatures have been raising (around 80+ or so - before it would only reach 70 max) causing the laptop to throttle back giving me dire frame rate in games.
Any suggestions?

clean out the dust from the vents.

Also apply some WU I guess. -
So you're saying that its just coincidental that I get all this problem just after upgrading the bios and such? Not a good enough answer for me. Either way I'm fairly sure it nothing to do with the GPU.
Anyone know how to roll back the bios updates? -
And like I said, use the actual laptop driver not the desktop modded one. Also some AC5 on your GPU, CPU, and NB would help. -
Never mind here are links

Its a genuine problem with XPS series laptops from Dell. Think twice before investing on any Dell XPS systems. Dell has already admitted the fault and working on the fix for the series.

get a cooler

Progress report: Downgraded my bios to A08. Still need to do more testing (i.e. long periods of gaming) but the temperature of the CPU has dropped all around and the problem appears to be resolved.
Thanks BlackRussian for the link. -
You sure that maybe the newer BIOS changed an ACPI table and whatever software you were using was reporting a 10 degree difference?

You know me - UPS just picked up a Studio 1557
I just tell my wife that I am a Dell Product Tester -

HAHAHA Product tester. They might actually ask you to be. Anyway the alienware forum is still open for you
Are the xps as good as alienware with the heatingor maybe next models will adapt the same technology? -
i still like xps better though, dont have the performance, but the reduced thickness and weight make up for it -
Like stated before on this thread.. On dell's driver page you have options to downlaod older version drivers and bios as well.. LOL you dont have to replace your motherboard all you have to do is downlaod the older bios A08 and install it the same way that you installed the new one. It will overwrite everything.
As for people saying remove dust, you guys need to understand that he began experiencing the problem right after he updated the system, so how can his laptop possibly attract so much dust in matter or minutes or even hours?
Just roll back the drivers or bios, and see what you can keep updated and what not. -
