I dont know if anyone has had this issue or not but lately Ive noticed that the scroll function on my touchpad seems to fall asleep after I use it, it will start working again after I tap or use the touchpad but is so annoying. I have installed the latest touchpad drivers, I do miss the auto scroll function that I had on my old inspiron..is there anyway to enable that on the XPS?Do you think I have a defective touchpad?

I received my xps 1530 today. I have a narrow window to choose between it and an hp pavilion 6700 series.
Per the post above, I couldn't believe that within 1 hour of test driving my xps I was ready to return it because of the touch pad of all things.
I find it intolerable, and am curious if I got a bum piece.
The scrolling features are sporadically responsive, and the pad itself is super jumpy, erratic, and also sporadically responsive.
By comparison, the HP touchpad navigation is smooth as can be in all conditions.
My question: is this just a reality of the xps, or is it worth exploring a replacement machine hoping for a better navigation experience?
thanks in advance. -
1. Go to "Device Manager", right-click your TouchPad and click "Uninstall".
2. Reboot your computer.
3. Allow windows will automatically search and install a generic driver for your TouchPad.
4. Download "R166314.EXE" from the above link and install it.
5. Reboot your computer.
6. Go to "Device Manager", right-click on the first device under "Mice and other pointing devices"
7. Go to "Power Management" tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." and check "Allow this device to wake the computer."
8. Repeat Step 7 for all devices present under "Mice and other pointing devices"
9. Reboot your computer. Your problem is solved.
Dell XPS M1530 comes with an Alps TouchPad. Neither Dell nor Alps provides any utilities that can provide additional functions. I wish, they had used the Synaptics Touchpad! -
thanks! that driver helped me too, though im using win xp, and it is for vista. still it works.

I Have A Week Old Vostro 1500 With Me. Today A Techiee Came From Dell To Check The Installation Of My System And Removed Almost All The Programs From Startup (using Msconfig). He Removed The Synaptics Driver Also From There. After He Went I Noticed That Touchpad Scroll Function Is Not Working. I Again Added Synaptics Driver At Start Up And It Started Working.
Is It Necessary To Have Synaptics Driver Running At Startup To Work Scroll Function. Or Is There Anyother Way Around... -
Used the driver and seems to be fixed for now, Thank You.
The option for the "Power Management" tab is not available on my system. So far no issues though, I will run the battery down to nothing and let it cycle in and out of sleep to see if this is an issue for me.
Previously I tried drivers from the 1330 and the 1730 and niether worked. -
Tried to reinstall drivers and have the same problems. -

The ALPS in my 1720 isn't as bad as you're describing though. It works OK except for not scrolling smoothly, and horizontal scroll not working in Firefox. I had to disable "tap to click" in Dell Touchpad settings though. I have Dell Touchpad in my taskbar. If you don't find it there,
Start --> Control Panel --> Dell Touchpad
If you're having problems with your cursor jumping around the screen, or the touchpad becoming unresponsive for several seconds, you might try uninstalling and reinstalling your touchpad drivers. -

Maybe I'm retarded but what exactly are the bars on the bottom and right side of the touchpad supposed to do? They look like scroll bars but they don't seem to do anything special whenever I put my fingers over them. I'm confused because my last laptop never had any such thing.
-
The bars are paint. They're there to indicate where the scoll areas are, although depending on your settings/drivers, the scrolling may be disabled.
Actually, here's my HKCU entry for my touchpad. I have scrolling, dragging, tapping, etc, turned on. Go ahead and back up your own reg keys and give them a shot if you don't like how the Alps is behaving. It might be a bit sensitive/fast, but I trust you can tweak them to your liking.Attached Files:

I had a similar problem with my 1330. Shifting to Synaptics drivers rather than the dell drivers solved it. AFAIK, you can use the Synaptics drivers with an Alps touchpad.

I have a dv5z and am experiencing the same jumpy scrolling. The mouse itself moves very smoothly, but the scrolling is very jumpy. What do you suggest?
-
my xps1530 touchpad seems to have the same issues as many others here. Half the time works fine, half the time jumpy and unresponsive. I'm going a bit nuts after just spending 1.5h on the phone with a dell tech - all he could suggest was to uninstall and re-install the drivers which I'd already done (and as someone suggests in this thread - r166314). I see someone suggested a synaptics driver as an alternative - any recommendation as to which one? If I can't fix this it's going back to dell.
