    Hi,

I have just received my new Studio XPS 1645 yesterday. since then i had been trying to install XP OS. then finally after being touched with dell, they said me that this machin is not compatible with XP Operating system. anyway, after that i tried to install vista ultimate and win7 dual boot. finally today i made it.

but the problem is both in VISTA and WINDOWS 7 the default font and icon is very small. in vista the taskbar icon is so small that they can hardly be seen. my screen is 15.6" widescreen with full hd (1920X1080). I have changed DPI Scalling to 120 DPI from the Default 96 DPI. but still the task bar icon (show desktop, switch between windows, internet explorer, mozilla firefox) is small. i have installed mozilla and it's font size has also become very small but clear(it seems). i m wondering is it they way in high resulation machine should appear. it's annoying. plz help me guys who is having this laptop. i m so upset. i have used many laptops and desktop as well, but never experienced this problem.

if you go to control panel, then display, it will ask you if you want to increase or decrease the size of everything. There are three options, small , med, large.

This might be what you are talking about.

Your Laptop: I think there is an option under Desktop Properties that allows you to select from 3 icon sizes: Small, Medium and Large. I just chose large, and everything looks great. Not super big, but acceptable.

My laptop is at home right now, if no one else helps you, I'll tell you the exact steps tonight.

Firefox: Are you using Firefox 3.6? The small icons is the problem in the latest version. Here is a solution:

Put about:config into the address bar, Enter, click through any warning page ("I'll be careful"), then into the Filter box paste:

    layout.css.devPixelsPerPx

Double-click the line listing that pref to change the value to 1.5 or 2
You can experiment with other values, but you really don't want to go above a single digit value.

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/530856?s=font small 3.6 config

    I hope it helps!

there is a custom dpi option off to the side where you select the small medium large dpi's. Where ya can go all the way up to 200% if you wish. Will this perhaps help?? For bigger icons on the desktop you can hold down control and scroll on your mouse to increase icon size, but i dont think this is what you are looking for.

If you use vista, you can use microsoft powertoy for xp to adjust cleartype setting. In windows 7, it is in control panel already.
Windows 7 also comes with some new fonts which looks better on hd screen.

The icon looks smaller than usually I think. The text looks fine. I think it's vista's problem. The icon size isn't adjustable IIRC.

I can read them on my 15.6 screen at normal distance.

It's up to individual programmer who chose which font unit. If they use pixel instead of point, the font will just look small on hd screen.
If you can't read them, windows 7 has a magnify.

go into control panel, make sure it is set to "small icons" at the top

then find the icon that says "display" and read what I posted already.

    Hi guys,

Finally i have decided to return this machine (Studio XPS 1645) due to the very small font and icon in Vista Operating System. now i m wondering which machine to go? i need something with i7 processor and better dedicated graphics card as well.

and also HD Screen. but i think i shouldn't go anymore 1080p as dell technician said me becouse of that resolution i was getting very small font and icon in default DPI settings with native resolution(1920X1080).

Guys, any idea about any machine of dell as i love dell becouse of their service.

Seems like nothing was wrong with the laptop at all. User error. Pretty obvious he's never had a high resolution display before. Every screenshot looked perfectly normal on my 1080P 16". You should do a little more research on the things you buy before you claim something is wrong with them.

I didn't mean to say that there was something wrong with the machine. i have never used full hd screen laptop, so i haven't had any idea of that. but the sells man was suppose to tell me about this. i don't know how the other people r using HD Screen. anyways, how is the font and icon size on 16" screen? is that better than mine? so i can go for that. in vista it shows 96DPI, it's so small font.

I doubt you'll see a difference going from the 15.6'' to the 16'' screen in terms of sizes. I'd keep trying to adjust the dpi, fonts, and icon sizes until you find something you can use.

You just have to set the size to 125 % instead of 100 % (my laptop was set to 125 % by default but I prefere smaller icons and text so I did the opposite of what you want to do).

even though i set 120% DPI, i m not happy with the quality of the font and icon. icons r bit blur and fonts r fuzzy.

anyway, i have sorted this out. they r taking my system and refunding my money back and meanwhile i have ordered Studio15 with 1366X768 WLED with true life. hopefully this will fix my problem as i have seen myself this laptop in the shop. though the design and out look is very simple but at least good machine with latest processor and better Graphics card.

Guys, it seems to me Studio15 and S-XPS 1645 is almost same price. i don't know why Studio 15 machine is expensive? the one i m returning, i bought it for £964 with 1gb AMD HD4670 and the one i m getting is Studio15 by £793 with 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HP 4570 and with better WiFi where i paid £35extra for this. else everything is same.

NB: GUYS JUST A QUICK FAVOR REQUEST, IS THERE ANY WEBSITE WHERE I CAN DOWNLOAD WINDOWS VISTA ULTIMATE 64BIT AND WINDOWS7 64BIT FROM???

Also you shouldn't worry about how others are using the HD screen. Everyone is different and has different preferences. 1080p looks normal to me and many others. And to you it doesn't. So don't get a 1080p screen, end of story.
