My XPS 1530 was shipped around June 7. Within a week of getting it I had trouble getting it to go into sleep mode. Now I can't get it to shut down. It takes a long while for it to say it's shutting down and then after "shutting down" it goes into a restart. I shut down last night. Closed the computer. And came in this morning to find a very hot computer waiting for me. I got it running. Shut it down and it restarted. I had to turn it off with the button.

My question: Is this an issue that should make me return it and ask for another?

Years ago my Inspiron had a probem about two months after I got it. Dell worked and worked on resolving it. After nights on the phone and new just about everything, the problem remained. It took lots of screaming and crying to get a new computer. I don't want to be in that position again. But if you tell me my shut down problem is common and the fix is easy and reliable, I'll go for that.

    Thanks.

Make sure it's not software related first. Go into msconfig (start>run>msconfig) and go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything, sometimes the software packaged with computers causes problems like this. I fixed an HP with almost the same problem about 2 days ago and it was some crappy HP bloatware that caused the problem.

If it turns out to be hardware related, which would surprise me, I would want the system replaced. Dell is very good with replacing XPS laptops, I had my M1330 replaced on accidental warranty in just a few painless days.

See if this works. windows key+ r > type <shutdown>

Don't really know why your computer would restart. I suggest using system restore & restore back to when you first got the computer or doing a clean install of your OS.

Does anyone know what this is about? Could it have anything to do with my shutdown problems (which did NOT occur earlier today when I shut my computer down.)

    Thanks.
