I purchased a refurbished Dell XPS M1530 about 3 years ago and I was using them without any big problems until now. Yesterday, my brother was playing a game and the laptop just died. I checked my AC adapter, but that wasn't the problem.

I think my laptop died because of a defective gpu. My laptop couldn't really handle demanding games well and would turn off from overheating every time I play games like Sims 3 or Counter Strike Source. I don't think I'm covered under warranty anymore. However, I remember there was a lawsuit against nVidia for making defective GPUs for laptops.

Is there anything I could do? Should I contact dell or nVidia? Any help would be appreciated and thank you for in advance for your time.

Died as in it doesn't power on or you get no video? The defective Nvidia chip results in loss of video or artifacts on the screen.

Really? It just doesn't power on. But I'm pretty sure I also had a defective nvidia chip since it would always overheat and turn off when I play games.

    Have you tried:

    - Testing your AC adapter with a multimeter

    - Using a known good Dell 90 watt AC adapter

    - Removing your battery and AC adapter, hold down power button for 30 seconds 2-3 times

If you try all that and still doesn't power on, it is most likely you have power circuitry problems with your motherboard. The Nvidia chip will not cause this.

It's probably power section (90%) or burned gpu (10%). Get it diagnosed, it doesn't cost much.

i think it's too late for the nvidia lawsuit thing

The NVIDIA GPU Litigation - Home Page

time period to make claims ended about a month ago :/

that's when u shouldve talked to dell about these problems and maybe get a refund or something. as long as u have good airflow under the laptop, ur laptop shouldnt be turning off from overheating unless something was really wrong

theres nothing u can really do except get a new laptop or try to send this to be repaired which can be expensive, esp since u dont have warranty anymore. and if ur laptop cant really turn on, then u will probably have to replace something hardware wise which might not even be worth it.

    to Tsunade_Him:
I tried all that, but it still doesn't work. Then, what should I do? Is there places where I can just take my laptop and get it fixed?

to tj69: How and where do I get it diagnosed? and how much is it really?

Thank you for your time guys, I really appreciate it.

You would be better off finding an Intel GPU motherboard or just getting a new computer. Refurbished motherboards are just ticking timebombs with the Nvidia GPU.
