My XPS 17 L720X have been running very well with Intel 510 120GB SSD for 2 years. Is it worth to upgrade to Samsung 840 Pro-240GB?

    Hi,

I have bought this XPS 17 L720X along with Intel 510 120 GB SSD for 2 years. It's been running very good so far, but I never stop looking for something much better in term of performance and reliability. I wonder if Samsung 840 Pro (240 GB SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com ) is worth to upgrade? I'm afraid that my XPS 17 has already reached the limit of handling SSD drive. I wouldn't want to upgrade if the performance improve only slightly such as 05-10%.

Please advice me on this matter.

    Thanks All

    Lamk.

Honestly, I feel that the Samsung 840 Pro is a good buy for your system. After all, the Dell XPS 17 L702X supports 6Gb interface. However, one could argue that the speed in read/write is not noticeable on both SSDs, I beg to differ especially during start up and shut down including writing big chunks of file on the Samsung 840 Pro. Besides, the Samsung 840 Pro is more power efficient also.

At the end of the day, the choice is yours but I'll upgrade if I were you. I've tried the 830, 840 and the 840 Pro. I am just waiting for the 840 Evo to be released.

    Good luck to you.

I'd go with the 840 if you want capacity, or the Evo, if you want performance. For what you pay, the 840 Pro is just not worth it.
