Mkv files play fine on my m1330, but I can't 'fast forward' properly

Occasionally I can 'fast forward' (and by that I mean tracking forward. To the end of the movie, for example) in an mkv. file, using (an admittedly older version of) VLC. It's really strange that although it sometimes it works flawlessly - I can simply click and I'll be watching the end of the film, the middle, and the beginning again, without a problem - but other times I'll click to the part of the film where I left off and it won't "load". The film is still "running" (I see the timer tick by), but there is no picture nor sound. I found that if I click to the near-end of a film it's almost as if the entire film has to load (at about a quarter of real time, might I add) before it will play that part.

Maybe it's just a matter of getting the latest version of VLC (although I hate their new GUI). Has anybody heard of this problem before? My codecs are up-to-date.

    Try out Media Player Classic.

I usually see this behavior when the file is slightly corrupted, it can't properly determine the end of the movie and such.
I agree with Andy's suggestion, try MPC, it can sometimes do a better job.
I recommend also the CCCP to be sure all your files will play.
