I have a Studio XPS 1640. Turned it off two days ago and it won't give me a video signal. New mobo from eBay may be bad. Fine. It has a 90 day warranty. Except now the fan won't spin. Not even plugged into my old mobo. How many things like CPU etc need to be attached to test the fan? Any or just the wall to mobo power connector?

In theory it should run with just the CPU, memory, power adapter, and whatever you need to turn it on (ie a daughterboard for the power button).

Okay so when I tested it without CPU/memory that was automatically doomed to fail.

The screen has two power inputs plus video, correct? I'm dreading if the fan, mobo AND screen are bad (since I didn't get video or a fan spin up with my old mobo either).

While CCFL screens (and even older LED panels) tend to have separate connectors for the backlight and the LCD, but I'm pretty sure that the panels for the 1640 only have one connector for power and signal. The display assembly as a whole may have more connectors for WIFI, the webcam, etc.

In the interest of "answer for Googlers," the video card appears to have died. The screen seems fine.
