    Greetings community,

There is an advice needed on how to lower the temperature on GPU's (8800 GTX SLI) I've undervolted OCed CPU 3.0Ghz @ 1.2V, and yesterday received about 51 to 55 C on idle (GPU).
Today it was pretty constantly on 71-75, I would not talk about OCing GPUs, well then even on slightly changed core bus to 550 & memory bus to 850 (as well as shaders) made regular 75 C running all night on idle.

Okay, when fans enter the madness mode @ 3.4 with UV @ 1.3V there is a Significant decrease in temperature seen:
    [Idle] CPUs ~ 21-23 C, GPUs ~ 44 C
Not so much for CPUs so far (around 10-12 C from 3Ghz @ 1.2V), but it is real pleasure to see how GPUs went down around 20-25 C.

So, I'm not so concerned about mid-30 C for CPUs, as far as GPUs will stay about 50 on idle without fan noise @ 3.2 - 3.4
As I heard earlier undervolting GPUs is pretty much unworthy thing, when underclocking is more appropriate but does not solve the issue as well. Well, there is a I8KFan program - but it won't suit the problem due 2 vs 3 fans limitation.

[ Perhaps, I was stressing GPU with regular 3dmark06 runs yesterday 5-6 times, if that might be part of issue ]

[ Running Vista SP1 32bit, also there is a concern of 3GB limitation (4GB onboard), due some processes would gradually take GPUs RAM which will increase temperature ]

    * Cryo LX on max. underneath the laptop, as well. By the way, if someone knows how to tweak fans in the cooler (without fans replacing option) so they would ventilate harder, let me know.

    3DMark06 [Default 1280*1024] @ 3.4 (1.3V/16x) @ GPU [Default 500/800/1250] @ 180.43/Dox : 13234
Well, some would say it should be around 1k more, but for my experience without UV yesterday it was 13808.
Really, can't tell on which factors the score depends. Perhaps overload (3dMark06, Orthos)

The primary question is, can I undertemp GPUs and how? Second would be, if there is a program which can cut fan speeds in half when they are on idle (like RMClock for CPU)?

Any help would be highly appreciated!

    Sincerely,
    Tim

I am using the same cooler you have but I got an AC adater from radio shack with an H adapter and I am running the fans on my Cryo LX cooler at 12v to get max air flow, also I run my X9000 cpu at 3.4Ghz undervolted to 1.2375v this way the cpu and gpu fans are running all the time which keeps my gpu's running at 49c idle and they never go above 74c under load, if you run the cpu at 3Ghz the fans will only run when the gpu's reach 75c and is why they run so hot, the cpu would go to 72c too at 3Ghz after I tried that I went back to 3.4Ghz. The cpu idles at 35c and maxes out at around 65c under load. One thing I do have the laptop propped about 1 inch above the cooler in the back with some rubber blocks to help with the air flow which helps a lot to cool things down even more. :D :D

    Good Luck!!!

Thank you for your detailed answer jesse6749!

I will definetely try this "configuration" these days, well you made Cryo really work as it should be - good thing to power it from outlet as well (fan speed & motherboard wear concern)

There is a minor update to the original post:
Talking about games and load, I ran "Dead Space" maxed out on 1920*1200 around hour/hour and half, so GPU went up 50 C Max. @ 3.4/1.3V

And, 1.2375V... Well, I would not rush to try such settings by now.
They do look sick, a bit, especially when you remind default 1.4125V =)

    Edit on the AC Adapter:
    12VDC 1500mA AC Adapter
    radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2190632

Is that one you have? I guess it is only 6V you receive from these fans by default, when they are connected to motherboard.
I've seen 18/24V as well, wouldn't they just burn the cooler eventually?

This is the one I have: http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...ype/12V+or+less&allCount=46&parentPage=family , also a correction the plug, what I have is the I not H plug, the H plug is too big for Cryo LX, I got this Ac adapter so if I want a bit of quietness, I just lower the voltage since it is adjustable from 3 to 12v but I would not try any higher than 12v as it would burn up the fans since most fans are rated to 12v max including the ones on the Cryo LX. On the 1.2375v vcore as long as you do not get the blue screen of death the lower voltage does not hurt the cpu at all, it actually helps lenghthen it's life but 1.3v is a good and safe spot for the cpu.
Edit: I did get the AC adapter because I did not like running the 3 fans off the motherboard USB ports, it puts some stress on the motherboard circuitry and that made me feel very uncomfortable.

Definitely going to buy this one! Also looking for some benchmarks when I'll finally get my hands on Samsung SLC SSD's.

You know even with 12v the fans are not loud or annoying at all cause they are 120mm which are usually quiet even at full speed.

After you pass through first 10-20 minutes of OCed M1730 >3.0Ghz, you really don't care about noise from other devices anymore. Either you become psychologically deaf to (fan) noise in general or using noise-isolating headphones, when experience matters. Radioshack is up in queue for tomorrow =)
