I'm planning to install Windows 7 64 bit on my brother's old XPS M1710 (T7400, 4 GB RAM) which has Windows XP at the moment. Will it work OK do you think?

There's no reason it shouldn't work... I've run 7 on my M1710 several times with several configurations and I've never had any issues...
