I popped in the webcam manager disc and i suddenly discover that my optical drive is not working. It tries to read the disc for about 20-30 seconds once i push it in and then ejects it. Interestingly, though.. it successfully reads the OS disc and the drivers and utilities disc. Tried 7 more CD/DVDs but no luck. Even MS Works, Roxio, Audigy discs weren't read.

Any idea what this is? and whether it can be corrected via a firmware/software fix... cause i'm out of warranty... :(

Had the same problem, had to have my drive replaced. What happend was my original drive stoped working, so dell replaced it with another one. The one they replaced would do what your describing now, except it would always eject them and would never read anything. Had that replaced and now it works fine.

Same situation I had, but with an M1330 and a Matash*ta drive. Nothing, unfortunately, will fix it except a complete replacement. Look on E-Bay. I've seen the M1530 dvd burners for about $80.00. Pain in the backside to get to if its anything like the M1330, which I think it is, because you've got to remove pretty much everything to get to the drive.

Yeah you do have to pretty much remove everything.

Yeah... I saw that too on the manual. Let's see... I'll try to find a new burner and replace it myself. Or i might just go in for a warranty extension, shelling of precious cash which i really wasn't in the mood for before this stupid thing happened.
