My family has had one for 4 months now and there seems to be a little distortion in the speakers.
Are the speakers considered kind of low grade compared to the rest of the computer? or could it just have been someone in the family that had the music up to loud for a extended period of time?

The speakers are very low grade, though considering their tiny size, high quality sound is an over-expectation.

However they should be capable of normal playback without distortion, If yours aren't call dell and have them replace them.
