M1530 coming tomorrow or next, what to do?

So my M1530 should be coming tomorrow or the next day.

I know, check for wobble, grainy screen, scratches, sound, etc.

However, my question is this: Should I reformat my Dell XPS M1530 when I receive it? Will it be just windows Vista on the system without bloatware or the sort? Also, will all the drivers on the Dell DVD work?

Is there any risk to this? Or should I just keep it like it is out of the box and remove bloatware. Is it a large performance gain if I completely reformat it?

Also, is there anything specific I should look for with my configuration? (see sig)

    Thanks!

You might as well reformat it from the start if that is what you plan on doing. The restore disc will have the OS only and then you'll have a CD with your drivers. There will be other CDs too for some other programs that they throw in.

No no, I'm wondering if that's what I SHOULD do or not.

That is what you should do. It will get rid of all the crap so that you don't have to deal with it.

There wasn't a lot of crap from Dell on my 1530. I just removed it and all was well.

Just eavesdropping in on this as well. My 1530 should arrive about the same time Polarix' does...kinda unsure about the whole clean Vista install thing. I'm pretty computer savvy, but don't have a lot of experience with reinstalling an OS.

The only part that sounds confusing about the guide is the partitioning and the fact that some drivers aren't included on the cd they give you..

They do give you the drivers on the resource DVD.

You don't have to partition anything unless you plan on removing mediadirect or any other partitions. Otherwise you simply boot off of your restore CD and install. Yes, there is a noticeable performance gain; however, you can save substantial amounts of time by using a program such as Your Uninstaller or Revo to uninstall all Dell bloatware, and then use CCleaner to clean out your registry. It won't be as good as reinstalling the full OS (no matter what, some residual files/folders and/or registry keys are left behind). But, assuming you remove everything it should be pretty close to a full reinstall.

Hey, I followed Les's guide(s)...and found it a fairly simple process and it really *cleaned* up my notebook afterwards ;) :)

How do you know it is arriving tomorrow? My ESD is today, but does that mean when it will be shipped or when I should expect it?

Just checking before I do this. If I use Uninstaller and then use CCleaner, will it be obvious which registry keys I'm cleaning out?

I'm still leading towards a re-install of Vista, but I've never reinstalled Vista (XP COUNTLESS TIMES though, lol).

How long does it take to reinstall Vista? Ugh, still stuck... I'll see how much I can clean it up, then install vista if needed.

Your Uninstaller will detect registry keys created by the program and remove them. CCleaner will tell you each individual registry key that it is going to remove before you do anything.

@Polarix: from a fresh Vista CD (not sure if the Dell DVD is or isn't a clean copy) Vista can take anywhere from 20 minutes to probably an hour or so to install.

In the UK on the online status, Dell gave me a link to the carrier company site (Walsh Western), and on there they gave an Esimated Time of Arrival of the 02nd July (tomorrow). The Estimated delvery date provided by Dell was the 7th July.

My M1530 should also be arriving in the UK on 2nd July, similar spec 2.4ghz although it might have a 1650 screen (I ordered a 1440 but invoice says 1650 so who knows) and will have a blu-ray burner :)

I'm probably going to reformat and go to Vista 64 Ultimate, I believe everything works fine un Vista 64 (although a few people have had web cam probs) and that way you get to make full use of your 4gb of ram.

How long ago did you guys order? -- What was your Estimated Shipping Date?

I ordered on the 21st, with an ESD of the 9th. Hoping I don't have to wait that long.

Why don't you just re-install Vista? It's every easy to do. I did it with my M1330 and will do it on M1530 when it arrived.

Congrats on the fast ship times for all of you.

Makes me sad though, I am still showing in Production. Have been since I ordered.

    Hrmm.. Delays for WUXGA+?

I have the 9-cell... *shrug* -- Thought that was supposed to be faster

Damn. Just got off the chat with Dell Service. The 9-cell is supposedly delaying it. Could be upto another week.

    *sheesh*

listen, anyone debating on doing a fresh install should look at this thread. Its easy as can be for all levels of computer exp. Your kidding yourself if you think just going to add/del programs will clean up your sys. This gets rid of all that, and doesnt leave any fragments behind. Good luck, enjoy!
