I've been having problems recently when shutting down and restarting my laptop. Sometimes it goes perfectly fine and other times it takes forever to do so. It'll stay on the Shutting Down.... or Logging Off... screen for quite a while and just stays there. I tried using search to see if others had this problem but I mostly came up with hibernating/sleep problems which I don't seem to have. The only way to get it to shut down from here is to hold the power button and force a shut down. Does this in any way do harm to my laptop? Also, I barely installed anything on computer since I only use it for school so I don't think it's software related because it's only started to happen recently and I have not installed anything new since the day I took it out of the box.

If you look in the Vista tips n tweaks guide (in the windows os forum) by LES, he mentions about the need for Vista to shutdown all the services and processes before completely turning off.. and he goes on to mention tweaking this if you want, because there is a set time limit for the shutdown process (Was it 20 seconds, default, Les?) Anyway.. So you could try changing that time, but as Les recommends, and as I learnt as well, its better to leave it shutdown on its own... Don't force shutdown unless you don't have any other choice or unless u know for sure there is some problem with the system...

Alternatively, you could try taking a look there in that guide, as well as looking at services settings from blackviper to check the services running on ur comp (though I would like to warn you to be extremely cautious when changing any settings in the services, as much as Les warns and blackviper themself warn.. read through the services well, understand the dependencies and they have wonderful crisp, clear instructions and explanations for each service).... probably there are things like error reporting or wireless services or similar which sometimes take time to shutdown (the examples I mentioned are just pure guess from my part, but could be any other too)..

    Good luck.

I don't think it's supposed to hang on that Logging Off... Shutting Down... screen for more than an hour??? That is why I'm forcing the shutdown because it's an abnormally long time to wait for a computer to shut down. I did read about changing that time, but I rather leave it at default

Well, you didn't mention how long it was 'hanging' at that point in your initial post, mate :) you just said forever, and I assumed you are seeing it take longer than usual, which need not necessarily be an hour longer to indicate something is wrong...

Anyway, I don't know for sure why you are seeing this issue.. and if I understood correctly, its not often and only sometimes.. right? (Sometimes it goes perfectly fine and other times it takes forever to do so.) buh...

Yessir, I was unclear on how long it actually takes. And you are also understanding correctly, I have no idea why this is happening either o_O

I might have solved it... 5 tries in a row it would continuously freeze on either Logging Off... or Shutting Down... I searched a bit more on google and found this
"Did you try going into safe mode on the first boot after removing the battery? And you don't need to wait a couple of hours. Just a minute or two should allow the capacitors to discharge. To be sure, turn it off by holding down the power button for 5 seconds. Then remove the battery. Then, while battery is out, hold down the power button again for 5 seconds or so. Replace the battery, then try tapping F8 as you boot, to go into safe mode. If you get there, then try a shut down and see if it will shut down.

By the way, are you able to restart (I suspect not)? "

I did what he said about removing the battery for a few minutes, popped it back in, booted in safe mode, shut down from there, booted normally and now it shuts down properly. How strange

    Update:
I've figured out what is causing this shutdown/restart hanging. It's whenever I use my home network. Say I want to connect to my desktop to watch a movie that's on there, sometimes when I try to connect to it, it doesn't load, it just keeps trying to read. Hours later I go to shutdown or restart my laptop, still unable to connect to my desktop, and that's when it hangs. After I force shutdown, boot back up, I can now connect to my network and shutdown smoothly. Later on, I try to connect to my network again and it hangs... I go to shutdown and that hangs too. What is causing this and how is it fixable?

Typically when it gets to that point is time for me to do a reformat, though this isnt ideal for most people.
