You can sacrifice the DVD slot for second HD.
I never use the DVD drive, so I am thinking about doing it.

Really? There must be some degree of custom work, making an enclosure at the least.
The hdd is hot swappable, just slide in, slide out. but the dvd drive only has a ribbon connection so I don't know how you intend to convert it.
    I seriously doubt its possible.

Chryasor, you can do that on thinkpads but not on an XPS 1530. The optical drive can only be used for optical drive.

You need to get a special media bay and place the harddrive inside, they are pretty common.

Thats why it says you need to take the machine apart, probably need to remove the head of the bay as well.

What cable issue are you talking about?
You connect the hard drive to the SATA connection inside the bay, and connect the media bay to whatever connection DVD drive has.

    (I've taken the laptop apart)
The dvd is very easy to remove and installing an enclosure would be very easy, but how to you get the hard-drive connected to the mother board???

edit; both posted at same time - Jinx!! :)
The dvd drive doesn't have a simple ata connector, it has some modified ribbon cable. how to you get around that??

You don't connect the hard drive to motherboard.
Connect the hard drive to media bay, connect media bay to motherboard.
