I just discovered a German tread (posted in May) which gives release dates for the following XPS models:

    XPS M1340 - 08/24
    XPS M1640 - 09/23

There's nothing about a M1540 model so it's possible that the M1640 will replace the M1530.

16" screens with a 16:9 ratio screen seem to be the 'in' thing right now. I don't know why, I've used a 32" 1366x768 HDTV as my desktop screen for 3 years now, and the smaller vertical screen real-estate is really annoying, much more significant than you'd expect. Having experienced both 16:9 and 16:10 in PC, gimme 16:10 anyway. Few movies are 16:9 anyway.

The M1340 will probably be 16:9 as well (13.1). I need a 13" travel/backup notebook and a 16"/17" primary notebook to keep home. Personally, I'm interested in the Sony Z as my "travel" notebook but probably won't get the blu-ray option which means no 16:9.

This time of the year rumors become true. ;)

The 16:9 ratio is kind of nice because it ends up only being an inch wider than the M1530. We'll see. Hopefully sooner than later.

It also ends up being smaller vertically. You soon realise that on a PC, vertical real estate is far more valuable than horizontal. Honestly, having used 1366x768 for 3 years, give me 1280x800 any day.

The whole mentality that 16:9 is better for movie viewing makes no sense, because few movies are 16:9 ratio anyway. Hollywood in particular uses even wider ratios than that.

I'd rather have the horizontal space.

Lame. I've held out for the new xps and if it turns out to be 16:9 then I'll be devastated. Maybe they will do a new xps but keep the m1530 and give it a new video card and new chips. Thats what I want.

    All HD formats are 16:9, not 16:10. And by the way, 16:10 < 16:9. 16:10 = 1.6, while 16:9 = 1.7.
And another thing: my (standard) LCD is 4:3 according to Samsung, while the resolution (1280*1024) is 5:4. Hopefully those ratios will be respected by everyone (16:9 and 4:3).

I'm pretty sure that 16:9 is cheaper to make. So we pay the same, the costs to make it go down. Someone profits more.

Just my view on why we're starting to get shoved into the 16:9 stuff.

Pretty soon we'll have 16:7 or some other ratio :p.

ive been waiting WAY too long for any new XPS release, the moment its out im picking it up..... be it 16:9 or 4:3.

Any ideas on which GPU they will be putting in with the Centrino 2?...Im not a big fan of the lower end ATIs that they are putting in with the new Studio line.

Well, it most definately won't be a 4:3. Long gone are those cropped formats.

Have you actually used 16:9 on a PC for a substantial amount of time? Because most people prefer the wider resolution which is 'proper HD standard' until they actually use it, because you realise that you use vertical space more, especially for web browsing etc, not to mention that so much vertical space is take up by task bars, title bars, windows menus and the like. 16:9 is certainly a more suitable ratio for movie use, hence Sony using it on their Blu-Ray laptops, but it's honestly quite a pain in the ass for desktop usage.

Each to their own of course. As long as it's higher than 1366x768 then it's not so bad.

Yes, I have used it previously when I used my one desktop as a HTPC hooked up to my TV. I thought it was fine. The Sony has a 1600x900 resolution, I think it will be fine.

on my laptop(m1330 16:10), my startbar is on the right... i config my browser(Opera, which IMO is much better than IE/FF) to zoom to 130%... not bad!

It means whoever made this thread is a necromancer, which means someone who resurrects dead people and is generally not trusted.

    = this thread, is fake.

I think nickbarbar was referring to the resurrection of this thread by ausbj after it had been "dead" for a few weeks, and not that the thread is fake. :p
