I got my M1330 laptop today and it looks really cool. But I just got annoyed by one thing. My hard drive is pretty noisy ( when it is busy or being accessed ). Is this happen to other m1330? It is pretty annoying since hard drive is being used all the time. It sound like small version of clock ticking sound. My english isn't really good. Hope, you all understand what I mean :D .

Most likely, this is Vista building up the index for its search. You can disable indexing if you would like. If it doesn't go away in a few days, then it could just be a nosy hard drive since some models are more nosy than others.

Thanks you atbnet for quick reply. I already disable indexing option. but still noisy .. I don't even think DVD drive eject/inject sound is loud. But this one is really annoying because it is being used all the time. Well, I can't help but just need to accept what i got :D

it depends on what hard drive you have... different manufactuerers = different speed, sound, noise....

if u really hate the sound, call dell and ask for a replacement hard drive

I don't really know what brand it is. spec is 5400 RPM Sata 320 GB. It isn't really easy to call dell here. ( I think i can only send to dell center ). And what is strange is I didn't hear that sound when I first start using the laptop ( I even surprise how laptop is so quiet ) . but after using about 2 hours, I noticed that sound and it is still happening.. :(

it is on even surface and laptop seems fine. It is just the noise from hard drive reading. But it is always happening and sometime without the signal from Hard drive indicator. ( more noisy come when HD is busy )

Try setting the BIOS setting for HDD acoustics to Quiet.

Even with possibly having to send it away, I would talk to Dell. You have every right to a laptop that is working well for you and harddrives are not supposed to be noisy like that. There is a defect somewhere since it has not gone away. Maybe if you hold the phone up to the laptop when it is noisy so the tech can hear it, they will simply send a new hard drive to you without having you send the whole laptop in, lol! Another option could be to simply buy another harddrive but you paid Dell good money for your faulty one. Finally, if you have not already, please search the forum for noisy harddrive threads as I do believe there have been a few (don't know if they might be applicable but....).

    Hello!

Well, there are 3 types of sounds with my HDD (Hitachi 200GB 7.200rpm with Free fall sensor):

The standard read/write sound - subtle, but definitely hearable when in excess use (for example when I just installed Vista and it's indexing and updating forever). This doesn't bother me during everyday use, and it shouldn't bother. If this is too loud your HDD might be faulty?

The occasional "flick"/"snap": this is apparently the HDD going into some kind of standby during use. It did bother me a bit in the beginning, because it could happen even many times per minute, but now I don't even hear that anymore. To me it's one of the few sounds a computer can make which doesn't actually bother. Maybe because it's not a constant noisy kinda sound.

And then I have a distinctive relay sound whenever I accelerate my laptop too much (when lifting it up, etc.). That would be the free fall sensor, which is pretty loud, but of course only appears when moving the computer around. It's kind of a reminder to be gentle ;)

    Cheers

    Matthias
