I have installed Windows-7 on XPS M1330. The CD/DVD could not read any data CD/DVD that are personally created. It can only read original installation CDs/DVDs. Reference BlackRussian's solution for Windows OS ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=197770) , I did not find those registry keys UpperFilters and LowerFilters on Windows-7. Has anyone made the CD/DVD combo drive on the M1330 work on Windows-7?

If it's the mats hita drive, then it all points to a laser issue, so it's more of a hardware problem. It might just have recently failed as a coincidence after installing Windows 7. The only solution is to replace the drive which I did and now all disc reading and recording work fine in windows 7. My drive had the same symptoms until I replaced it. It would read retail dvd's, but couldn't burn or burned then failed and wouldn't read any of my old dvd-r or cd-r media. Doing the upperfilter / lower filter fix didn't work for me and like what was said in that linked thread, it causes issues with recording software. I had to reinstall itunes again when I needed to burn an mp3 disc using an external drive before I installed the new one.

When was the last time you burned a DVD-R disc and used it with this drive prior to the Windows 7 installation?

I just burned a DVD last week when it was still having Vista. It burns alright but it will not read what it just burned. The DVD however can be read from another PC. I installed Windows-7 hoping that Windows-7 will handle this drive properly but it still is behaving the same way as before. I guess the only way is to change this drive.

Still sounds like its in the process of failing entirely. I don't think any registry fixes will bring it back. It's a bit of hassle to get to it for replacement, but there's some good step by step guides on Dell's website and while you're in there, you can do some maintenance like cleaning including all the dust buildup on the fans.

Stick a can of compressed air in the drive and let loose. I thought that my drive was failing a couple of months ago until I did that. Now it works fine, I think the laser head might have been a little dirty or something, and the compressed air cleaned it off.

I'm having troubles with my Mast drive not burning any cds anymore as well.
I've called dell and a rep told me to do the utility test and get back to them if there's a problem. The result was "no problems found" so I'm kind of bummed right now because dell wont replace it if theres nothing I can give them based on the report.

I had the same exact problem that the cds and dvds were all being read properly, but while burning dvds it would get an error while in the middle of the burn process. A technician came yesterday to replace the drive, and after he left it was not reading anything and was making a different noise. Had to call dell again and they found out it was some driver issue and it was fixed. I tried burning a disc again and it had a error again. I found that while burning the laptop should not be moved at all and then it will burn properly, but any movement generally results in a failure. So I think its an inherent problem with the slimline matsheta drive. Just burn all the discs on a flat desk and dont touch the laptop and it should work better.

Well looks like my problem still wasnt fully solved. I burned a dvd in nero and it said the process was completed however this was not the case. The i flipped over the dvd and saw that it didnt even fully write on the disc, just like 1/6 of it. Anyone have any ideas? I had a tech come yesterday and the drive wasnt reading any disc after. I had called the tech today again and they fixed it over the phone by correcting some drivers. But my original problem of not being able to properly burn discs still exists. This is truly getting frustruating and my warranty expires in 10 days.
