Dell only offers 32-bit versions of Windows Vista. I think if you order Vista Ultimate, then you can haggle them over the phone to send you an install disc for the 64-bit version of Ultimate.

Since you can use the same product key for either 32 or 64 bit options, get the DVD, and reinstall 64-bit Vista with the product key you get with the laptop.

Why do you guys want the 64 bit versions? Are a lot of apps coming out now that make use of it. When I built my last desktop there was only some of the business stuff that was supporting it and it was hard to find 64 bit drivers so all the "experts" said don't bother with it. Are there a lot of games and software that you actually use that is taking advantage of 64 bit now along with 64 bit drivers?

Vista 64 is great if you have all the drivers you need for your programs and hardwares. One program I have has V64 issue which is minor.. Canon's ZoomBrowser. At least programmers are at work making 64bit available. Lots of new gears are coming out with Vx64 instead of the 32bit version except for the low priced models. I have Vx64 for my desktop and x32 on my laptop. I don't really see significant speed difference since the CPU nowadays are fast.

I have 2 harddrives. Both have exact software loaded with the only difference is, one running Vista 32 and another one running Vista 64. I can tell you that I prefer using the harddrive with Vista 64.

64bit.. theoritcally you should see a 1-fold increase in performance, but u probably only see a 20% improvement

now programmers are trying to program in 64bit and multiple cores...

I haven't got my XPS yet but when I do I intend on getting the 64 bit dvd from microsoft. Will installing 64 ruin my warranty at all or will dell technical support give me **** for having 64 vista since they say they don't support it?

they wont support it meaning if anything goes wrong and u dunno how to solve it, reformat is the only way

if u ordered the ultimate or business, dell is obligated to send u te x64 disc..

if u have home premium, think microsoft will send u the discs with some nominal shipping charge

So a lot applications are making use of the 64 bit now? Last time I bothered looking into it about a year+ ago there were very few apps besides big business stuff that was making use of it so you just got all the hassle of trying to find 64 bit drivers without the benefit of increased performance.

Actually, you don't have to pay extra for 64 bit windows. Your key on your computer works for both 64 and 32 bit windows (legally). Just tell dell tech support to look under DSN policy document ID 158098, 5th bullet under policy, first sub bullet.
It says you are entitled to both 32 bit and 64 bit and you have every right for them to send the 64 bit CD to you.
