My L701X came with just one 640Gb hard drive and it has the caddy for the 2nd HD. My question is how large of a hard drive can I put in this? Am I limited to 640Gb? Thanks!

I'd imagine you can install any 2.5", 9.5mm drive. The largest such drive you can currently buy is 750GB. There are 1TB 2.5" drives, but they are all (afaik) 12.5mm high.

Again as stated above, the max is 750GB so I don't know if you want to pony up for 110 GB. Samsung is planning to release a 1 TB in 9.5mm form factor soon but it is only 5400 rpm (doesn't really matter IMO for a storage drive).

You could also remove your optical drive and buy a HDD caddy and that is another HDD for you.

Ok thanks! I wasn't sure if it was a physical size limitation or a capability limitation of the machine.

Well it's just a physical size limit for now (very few laptops support 12.5mm drives). There are 1.5 TB drives in the 2.5" but they are even larger (like 14-15mm).
