IT had delivered a nice new TB16 dock on my desk this morning. I have the laptop sitting on a coolmaster cooler. Just wondering despite using two external monitors should I keep the laptop (Precision 5520 / XPS15) screen open? Aren't the exhaust vents near screen?

I've got it closed at the moment, been using Revit and other 3D software all day max reported temps 64C (CPU) (Coolabratory Liquid Ultra repaste on CPU and undervolt). I'm guessing this is ok?

It doesn't matter if it's opened or closed. Do whatever is most convenient for you.

If fan noise becomes an issue, and your laptop design uses the top deck of the laptop for cooling or airflow, then you may possibly reduce fan noise that way (depending on your actual temps and fan curves).

I sshould also mention that most internal laptop WiFi antennas are routed alongside the LCD display bezel. So if the laptop is closed, your WiFi antennas will not be pointed up. This may make a difference if you are using WiFi, and your laptop is located in a location with borderline wifi signal.

Frankyl, I'd say keep it open. The top part above the vents also heats up and you don't want to heat up the LCD panel itself.

The laptop antenna sit between the screen hinges as you may have noticed it is an aluminum panel on the back of the screen so they had to move them into the open. They work with the screen open or closed, closed they are pointing straight out the back. Same with the vents, they force the air out the bottom when closed and a bit of both when open so it shouldn't matter.

I'm on LAN so wifi isn't an issue. The hum drum of daily office life hides any noise so that's fine.
Finding the laptop pretty much silent when using it at home for YouTube etc when on battery.
    Very impressed so far.
Priced up a precision 7720 with same specs. Can't belive how much more expensive it is!
