I was wondering if DDR3 RAM of the speed 1600 or 1866 will be downclocked to 1333 in an L502x, or if it will run at it's rated speed? I found it extremely hard to find a straight answer to this.

A screenshot of CPU-Z's Memory and SPD tabs would be excellent!

Processor i7-2720 or top, works full speed.

Processor i7-2630 or lower, downclocked to 1333.

    Regards.

Actually no. Dell has BIOS-locked all RAM to 1333 max in the Sandy Bridge systems. A couple of people have reported the RAM reporting itself running at full speed, but only a few. Don't bother chancing it.

From experiences that i read in this forum, only someone with L502X with i7 2820QM run memory at full speed (1600 or 1866 plug & play).

What Matt is saying. I havent heard anyone using more than 1333mhz so you might aswell save some money and get 1333mhz modules.

If it helps I have a i7 2820QM with 1600MGHz RAM and all I can get out of it is 1333MGHz.

I bought the RAM hoping for the best and didn't get much.

Thank you! I had been looking for a few hours and I did not come across a thread that dealt with my specific question.

Now I am curious as to why matt believes that Dell has BIOS-locked all RAM to 1333 max in the Sandy Bridge systems?

Here is what we think we know so far about the HyperX enthusiast memory:

    L702x w/Kingston 8gb HyperX DDR3 1600 gives no benefit over DDR3 1333

    L502x w/Kingston 8gb HyperX DDR3 1866 gives a benefit over DDR3 1333

    Bios versions unknown.

Have you HyperX plug & play or HyperX with XMP?
Because only plug & play version have chance to work.
(edit: i haven't read that you have an L702X, someone say that L702X has a locked bios to 1333MHz)

Someone say that L702X have bios locked to 1333MHz...
There is a thread very helpful for this question.

Is there anyone who has L502X with i7 2720QM that works with memory at 1600MHz or 1866MHz?

I just ordered the Kingston HyperX 1866 DDR3 SODIMM, and I will return it if it does not work. I'll post the results here, and it should arrive around Thursday.

I have an L502x with a 2720QM, but no absolute answer to whether or not it will work.

    If it doesn't work, I may give the 8gb Samsung 1.35v DDR3 a try.

    Wish me luck!

You can always buy lower voltage DDR3 or memory sticks with lower timings at 1333Mhz.
Anyways, it sucks that Dell limited BIOS to 1333Mhz when quad core i7 sandy bridge does support officially 1600Mhz memory.

Edit: Appears that the Precision M4600 has support for 1600Mhz memory, but only up to 16GB instead of 32GB that can manage if it's 1333Mhz memory.

I just received my Kingston 8gb HyperX DDR3 1866 in the mail today. I had no issues getting the memory to work :)

CPU-Z shows that the memory is now running at 931MHz as opposed to 6xx MHz with the 1333 RAM. This is with an L502x and 2720QM CPU.

I ran the Windows Experience Index and the memory score went from 7.5 to 7.9

So it appears the L502x is NOT locked to 1333MHz.

And the l702x IS locked. WTH Dell!?!?!?!?!? Not that it makes a huge difference in the long run, but still....

Perhaps one of the newer BIOS's on the 702x works with the faster RAM? If the 502x has it, there's no reason the 702x can't aside from Dell fail...

7.9 WEI certainly seems to imply it is running at full spec...

That makes no sense to me either. One possibility is the L702x can have 2 or 4 RAM slots, but still...

My bios version is currently A06.

I know I am being lazy and I am sure this question was answered long before but I can tie it into the OP...

Can the L502x and 2720QM CPU motherboard accept what the intel webpage says it should be able to use 16gb of ram? OH and at the Kingston 8gb HyperX DDR3 1866 plug and play kind so we can stay on topic =)

Or is it a crap shoot that some mother boards will just read it/use it correctly at the faster speed and me having the same specs as the OP is not a sure thing?

*** bah edit: I was shopping around online, no one makes 1866 plug and play laptop ram at 16gb 2x8gb yet? I could not find any does anyone else know of any?

Non-3D? Then 2 RAM slots is all you will get. Only 3D with the 555m, and quad-core get the 4-slotter. %&(% Dell :D

The only way to see if it will see 16gb of RAM is if someone has 2 8gb SODIMMs to try in it. Unfortunately at this point just about nobody does though.

A lot of times the manufacturer states the maximum RAM based on the largest DIMMS they have to test with at the time, which doesn't tell us anything about the actual maximum RAM.

I see that this thread is kind of old to say the least.. but Mikeybc, did you ever get new ram? I'm looking to get 1600mhz memory and I'm finding answers on both sides

    Hi Sgraffite!

Would you please tell me if your L502X bios tell you whether your RAM speed is at 1600 or 1866? I'm currently running two 1600 chips and my bios indicates 1600 - I just want to know whether your 1866 chips' can be recognized by the bios correctly.

    Thanks!

well, since people keep posting on this old topic

there are modified BIOS (Unofficial) for both L502X and L702X wich allow change this setting, it obviusly works only if compatible memory modules are present, on modified bios , this setting can be changed easy
