I've heard that Ivy Bridge can be a drop-in replacement with an existing SandyBridge socket and a BIOS update. Does anyone know if this possible with the Dell XPS (L502x or L702x)?

Could be a cheap way to extend the life of this laptop.

I don't think it's possible and it would be a pointless upgrade if you ask me. If you have a SB quad, a marginally (10-20%) faster CPU won't make a difference. Your main reason to complain would probably be the GPU.

No laptops will not be forwards compatible with Ivy Bridge. The performance gains from SB to IB are minimal, as stated above. If you want a more powerful GPU, sell your laptop and buy a new one.
