Yesterday i got my new XPS l502x , i7 FHD, and from the first time i started it, some fan inside is turning on and off randomly even if i am not doing anything that requires more cpu or gpu power, just browsing. I've read about t this problem, and i installed newest nvidia drivers, i dont have any gadgets on my desktop, so i guess it's not causing the problem.

Another issue is that while scroling pages i notice some kinda of electric noise coming from the inside of laptop, i can't figure out is that coming from speaker or somewhere near it.

Also 2 of my friends also got their XPS's yesterday, i5 versions, and both have the same fan problem. I thought dell laptops are quality laptops, but seems i was wrong

You could try RealTemp (it's a freeware) to monitor the temperature of your CPU and GPUz (also a freeware) to monitor your GPU temperature.
GPUs have tendency to run hotter than CPUs even when the system is idle. It is likely that the fan is kicking because the temperature of the GPU went beyond a pre-defined threshold. The fan in a laptop with a dedicated intel GPU start spinning at about 50c, and stops when the CPU temperature goes below 45c. In some laptops such as the Dell E6400, there is an option in the BIOS that allow some control on the fan. You can have the fan ON all the time, or set it up to kick in when the CPU get hot (at about 50c). Check the BIOS you might have a similar option.
Undervolting CPU and GPU is a good why to reduce their operating temperature. Undervolting the CPU is quite easy. Check this thread.
Undervolting the GPU is tricky. Basically, you need to extract the GPU BIOS using nibitor (a freeware), change the voltage setting, rebuild the laptop BIOS and then reflash it into the laptop. I wouldn't recommend it since you're laptop is brand new and still under warranty, as this will void your warranty.

Did you check if the laptop's build in microphone is ON?

The XPS series is Dell's top of the range. So amongst Dell product they are the best. I won't call the fan spinning a problem since it is doing what it is designed to do; i.e. cool down your CPU and GPU :)

    i guess all is fine.

About that noise while scroling, i turned mic off, but it's still same, i can hear it, i think it is coming from HDD.

It should open with a firm push of the finger. Mine does (I'm not gloating, just sayin')

Another satisfied dell customer!Ive had so many documented problems with dells so called top line xps series,I suggest you start the phone calls now. Your hdd noise is common I had 5 hard drives replaced,3 ram replacements, 3 tech visits, and so many hours wasted on the phone with tech support, also im on my 3rd replacement awaiting a 4th not cuz I want it but dell wont give me my money back.I own 3 alienwares the only problem ive had was a bad design hinge issue on my m11x they promptly fixed and gave me a 100 dollar coupon!!!! I can't believe they're the same company.....Read the threads on here and better yet read dells tech issue threads on dell support there are literaly more than you can imagine.I have a resolution specialist working on my case now.Read the xps 17 threads everyone with replacement issues are getting or trying to get alienwares instead of the xps.Be firm when talking to support not nasty, they will appologize a million times. Get a manager and tell them your issues, believe me they are well known at Dell.Getting your problems resolved are another thing entirely.Good luck.

I thought XPS has the best quality among n53 and pavillion dv6... But seems i was wrong.

It's their top line, but yesterday 2 of my friends and i bought XPSs and all of us have problems, with cooler and some noises coming from the laptop , and all of us are disappointed.... god...

Ok i fixed problem with memory card reader, i needed to push it harder, but i feel that this laptop is low quality one :( I hope that will change by the time.

Nikola,I thought the same thing. For the money it could be a great laptop, dell just has horrible quality control and sub standard support. The only thing I like about the xps15 is the brg 1080p screen, it's one of the best. Even better than my top line m17xr3 imho and the jbl speakers are real good for a laptop. The design is imo is plain, and the performance is good but it should have a better gpu. And better cooling.I lapped and repasted all my pcs & noticed dell either puts hardly any thermal paste on or globs it all over the chips.I cleaned and repasted and updated bios, chipset, drivers, etc It has no effect on the fan issue. My pc runs barely 42c and the fan spins like an apache copter.I understand its a design flaw which makes sense my m11x is so highly ocd and I barely notice the fan.

Yeah, speakers are great, display too, but fan control is bugged for sure, something is wrong there.

    I don't get this, I have had:

1 1080P non 3D non tv ...... It ran quiet and fine
    1 1080P 3D ..... It ran quiet and fine
3 Fast Track systems...... they all ran quiet and fine. Still currently using one.

Still waiting for the one I'm keeping and I got my fingers crossed now.

I have the same problem with the new lap I bought. It's an I5. Fan seems to work almost all the time. I'm worried.

I've owned an Inspiron and a Studio, both for 2 years, and they were both rock solid machines. Got my XPS and on the first day it crashed in a major way. Machine froze, clicking noises from speaker, screen is corrupted and jumping around. Spent 2 weeks talking to Dell, and they refuse to admit there's anything wrong with the laptop, and was going to charge me a restocking fee to get a refund. I ended up ordering another XPS exactly the same, since I can't find another brand with similar specs for the same money. I've been using it for a few days now, and no problems so far. Meanwhile still waiting on my refund on the original laptop. I hate dealing with Dell

I hate to say it fellas but join the club!Dell is the worst. I have spent weeks on the phone had 3 techs come out,it would've been more but I refused another so called expert touch my laptop, the last guy broke my bezel and was 4 hours late.I had also replaced 3 hdd myself 3 ram replacements (beeps at post) and the fan issue is a design flaw I heard.I also am on my 3rd replacement.I talked to another dell resolution specialist today hes calling monday to resolve my issue.LOL I have no faith in Dell.I was told they would give me any pc I wanted. Including alienware m14x as replacement, then canceled without explanation. This is corporates last chance. I own 3 alienwares and have had no serious issues.Ive owned this for approx 5 months or so, and its worked well for less than 2 weeks. We all need to get together and tell Dell Good bye.Sorry to be so angry ranting, but come on, this is rediculous. I know people who've had 6 gpus & 5 or 6 mb replacements, that is just crazy.

Just a quick update: I installed the Nvidia 525 driver yesterday. I've been working on the laptop almost 5 hours now and the fan only "came to life" once for a few seconds during that time! The computer seems to be cooler too. I hope it's not a coincidence.

Hmmm. My L502x i7 is rock and roll. No fan problems, nothing. Runs great, built great. Fast. After all, mine has a two year warranty. If it dies on me they'll fix it or give me another L502x (or newer). That was easy!

Just remember this is a very popular laptop so there are going to be a lot of people with it and when you look online you only see people posting about the problems because they're looking for solutions. So no matter what laptop you search for, you're going to find problems.

Also this is Dell's premier consumer brand laptop (along with the Alienware's but slightly different markets), these are going to be on average less reliable than any business-class laptop. You'll find this with Dell, HP and Lenovo.

Obviously it sucks that you're having problems with yours. But this is possible with virtually any laptop.
