Just like many of you who ordered pre-Windows7, I too was wondering if my system would come loaded with windows 7 if it shipped after the 22nd. I called dell customer service and even emailed my sales rep, both of whom informed me that if it shipped after the 22nd, it would have windows 7. Well, I got a ship notification that my system left on the 23rd. I got it today and guess what it was loaded with....bloody Vista!!!! I am soooooo disappointed and angry that they misinformed me.

Thanks Dell! Way to get my hopes up and take away the experience of powering on my new baby.

It's not like they install the OS on the ship date. I wonder why they would say that.

If you ordered Vista with free upgrade to Win7, I don't see how they could possibly just decide to install Win7 instead. That would be false advertising. Imagine how many people would have been pissed if they randomly decided to give you the free upgrade to Vista back when we were transitioning from XP.

I would have been ok with it had they just said "sorry, it will have to come loaded with vista and you will get the upgrade disks" but no, they told me otherwise. Apparently they told other people here that as well as there were posts about it.
I just had my heart all set on already having Windows 7. I have a pro upgrade ready to go and it would have made my life easier to upgrade but it's cool. I am about to start a clean install on it in just a few minutes.

Two representatives (one via phone and another via Dell chat) informed me that regardless of ESD, it would come with the OS stated at time of purchase (i.e. Vista) even in illogical cases where the ESD was 1-2 weeks after the release of Windows 7. When dealing with Dell, it is usually best to go by what has been written as opposed to what has been said. Chances are if your price quote states you'll be receiving component X, then you won't be receiving component Y regardless of what a representative may have thought.

Though it's unfortunate the representatives you spoke to misinformed you but I don't really see it as a bad thing. Personally I'd prefer doing a clean install anyways to guarantee I get rid of some unneeded first party software.

In any case, congratulations on the arrival of your new laptop :).

Reading these posts, and being a SXPS owner of two months now, I was one of millions who are "supposed" to receive the Win7 upgrade. I put in my order info, but still am waiting for the shipping confirmation. What's taking them so long? If Dell knew when Win7 was being released, you would THINK they would be prepared. Now, they have to deal with impatient and frustrated consumers, like me. :(

i told my rep that i wanted vista, because then i could get an OEM upgrade disc that wouldn't pollute my system with bloatware.

don't you think its better that the laptop ships with vista and later you get a dvd for win7, that way you have an extra legit os to install on your other computer at home?

Yea, that was a burden for YOU. It took all of about 20 mintues on mine, maybe less :)

BTW, it has nothing to do with installing the OS myself. That is simple and was not the point of the post. All I am saying is that Dell set my expectations for one thing and I was disappointed when that was not what I got. Also, had I not had my own copy on hand, I would have had to wait who knows how long for the Disk they are sending to experience it. It doesn't seem that you can place the order for them until you have your service tag.

Nope Cloud, I ordered the 1640. I finally got it after close to a month delay. As long as it took, you would think I ordered it with the i7. I considered the i7 but got too good of a deal on the 1640.

It's not THAT big of a deal. Windows 7 has often been termed Vista SP3. It's nice, don't get me wrong, and snappier, but, you've got Windows 7 coming for free and it's an easy upgrade. Relax, enjoy the nice hardware you got.

You're absolutely right. I installed it immediately after powering on the system. Honestly, I can't see the big deal just yet. It certainly isn't an earth shattering change. It has the same feel of Vista but like you said, a little snappier. I think I just bought into all the hype.

I just wanted to get it out of the way and get my drivers squared away before I started installing my games and other 3rd party software. I really can't wait to see how it performs.

BTW, I know text can be misinterpreted but trust me I am not that upset over not having 7 pre-installed, it was just a little time set back. I am just excited to finally have my system :D

Possibly, but what were you really expecting out of Windows 7? I've installed it on possibly 50 systems, and personally use it on all 7 systems I own. While there are no EPIC changes, for me, Windows 7 has been nothing but a POSITIVE experience...from the almost perfect installations on all the PC's to very fast startup times, to a nicer looking interface, and still, I am finding new features that I didn't know existed!

Spend some time with it, read about the new features (or you'll never know they exist), and give it some time, and soon, you'll sing it's praises, if for no other reason, than it's snappier, stable, and looks good.

In contrast, on the Apple side, the new, highly anticipated Snow Leopard release of OSX, looks (on the surface) to be just like Leopard. Nothing to get excited about either. But there are changes under the hood that make it something to want. Same with Windows 7.

    Enjoy.
