I"m getting crazy multicolored block artifacts just by surfing the web. can this be caused by a driver? It's really odd.

Possibly, but it could be that your 8600M GT is going bad. Is it overheating? You can check it with GPU-Z. Try 174.31 driver from laptopvideo2go.com...that's one of the common driver mentioned in one of the thread here.

Hi yeah I tried the 180.46 nvidia driver and it gave me multicolored block artifacts.
Thats why I just went back to 178.24 and everything is well again
so if u want the best breformance with no side effects install 178.24 I have been using it for a week now with a big improvement in games

I'm running 180.48, no probs, was using 178.24 previously - get ~ same results game wise.
Is anybody using 180.46 nvidia drivers?
