I believe the WiFi Link 5100 and 5300 are part of the Centrino 2 platform and as such, were only officially launched yesterday. I doubt anybody would've gotten hold of a module this quick (except on review units).

The title says "for Studio 15". Probably Centrino 2 will be launched on Studio 15. I don't know if it will be loose for the M1530, but from opening my M1730, I can definitely tell that the 5300 will never fit into the M1730. So, if the design of the slot is the same for M1730 and M1530, which probably is, the card only fills halfway and not held by any lock (which means hanging loose).

After upgrading, can you briefly review the performance improvement? I might want to upgrade my m1730 too.

    will do once it arrives

I currently have two cards, Broadcom based Dell 1505, and Atheros based 5008 model

Atheros is light years faster then Broadcom but Atheros still haven't ported their control panel to Vista so most advanced card options are missing in vista.

Plus wi-fi switch and detect doesn't work with atheros.

Thanks for the link. I guess I am still wondering what the differences are between the card we have now (49?? I believe) and this new one. Can anyone illuminate? TIA!

Looking at the specs of both, it looks like the max speed is 450 vs 300 mbps, a big increase if you have a "n" router

The 5300 is a 3X3. In theory, it would have better performance than the 4965. There are no true 3X3 AP's available yet though.

3x3 means that it has 3 transmit antennas and 3 recieve antennas. The old intel 4965 had 2 transmit antenna and 3 recieve antennas.

You cna find more info here: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3356&p=6

5300 definitely has better support since it is the newest and comes with all Dell Studio laptops. Not sure on exact numbers, but it should be an improvement over the 1510.
