    Hi guys

Dell is sending me a new hard drive since mine is probably faulty (constant rattling, a click that almost sounds like a bleep, ...). I know how to replace the hardware, but what about the software? Do I simply insert the windows XP (or vista, dunno yet) and install everything? Or should I do something else first (besides backing up files ofc)?

You can use software to copy everything as is on your current hard disk, and put that onto the new hard disk. But, this takes time and patience. It might just be better to use your Windows disc and do a full installation from scratch.

Cloning will cause problems in the long run as cloning programs scramble the 0's and % signs that are in the sectors of the hard drive. You may not run into problems at first, but if your performance goes down or you get random errors during use... you'll know what it is.

It is best to just install from scratch with Windows disc as advised by Zero.

OK. I haven't installed much on my laptop and I'm planning a dual boot anyway ... :)

    Thx for the info.
