Okay I got my new XPS m1530 but whenever im on my computer and its quiet (which is about 90% of the time I'm on it) I hear a sound, not sure if its the hard drive click or the CPU whine but I get it stop. It happens pretty much non-stop, it doesn't really sound like a click though. Do any of you know what this is and how to make it stop?
-
i think i get the same sound as you, it happens from time to time (i wouldnt consider it nonstop though). i think the click is coming from the hard drive, although im not sure what it could be if it only clicks once at a time. it might be something related to the hard drive turning on and beginning to spin up to speed. what type of hard drive did you get?
-
If the light is blinking on the front when you hear the sound then its the hard drive. The light is called the hard drive activity light, it blinks whenever the HDD is reading or writing.
Otherwise it could be something else. The only things that should make any noise are fans, hard drives, and optical drives. -
I too get this noise on my 1330. Loud and annoying, but happens only once a day or so.
Is this normal or defective hard drive sound? -
Did you change the BIOS setting to Performance? I recall seeing a few posts where this helped...
-
Its the hard drive. The thing is that it happens like all the time. I have tried putting the HD into performance mode in BIOS but that didn't help.

Will do. Do you think they'll just send a new one so I don't have to send back the whole computer which is perfect other then that.
-
Since you just purchased it, its going to fall under Hardware coverage. They'll NextDay a replacement to you and you'll have 10 days I believe to send the original one back.
Image your HD using Ghost or Acronis that way you dont have to reinstall everything. Usually, a replacement HD is blank so if you want to save your data, back it up. -
okay And just to make sure, what is the faulty hard drive company? And how do I check?

I can't stand this.
