    Hey,

My Dell XPS Studio 1645 after 2 repairs with refurbished parts is still throttling and since the last repair the eject button doesnt work - the wireless wont connect (only with a chord) and the charger doesnt charge the laptop to full (?!?)

How would I "Nicely" go about asking dell for a replacement system with equal or better specs

anything else to help would be great!

    Thanks
    [sp]timmeh!

Explain your problem during a dell chat and request a replacement. This will be your third repair so the agent should comply. Worse come to worse email Michael Dell ([email protected]) and explain your situation. Somebody from corporate should contact you within a day to handle your issues. My previous system was an SXPS 1645 and I was having a throttling problem after two repairs, in addition to the fan staying on constantly after those two repairs. Be prepared to receive either a XPS 17 or XPS 15. I don't believe the SXPS 1645 is still in stock.

if after 2 repairs, you should outright ask for a complete replacement. as TheFirst&Last said, explain all the problems your current unit has and tell them that you want a new replacement unit, no refurbished parts or units as you've had hell with them in the past.

as there are no new SXPS models, and you successfully negotiate a unit replacement, i'm sure you'll be offered a new XPS assuming your tech support agent is doing their job properly :)

When calling up Dell, calmly explain your situation, and your insistence on the new XPS line as a replacement. And also explain you've had multiple repairs done (though they can probably pull that up from the service tag).

I just got off the phone with Dell not an hour ago. They offered me a SXPS 1647 as a replacement to my 1645. They offered an i5 instead of an i7. They were willing to upgrade the HDD to 640GB and upgrade the wireless card since the i5 was a downgrade. I said an i5 is not an i7 so I would have to refuse and since they cannot get the i7 for the 1647 at this time, someone will be calling on Monday about other alternatives.

Here is a question to all of you who have had replacements:

What are the chances of getting something that is a much better upgrade if I were willing to pay the difference in price? For example, getting an Alienware M15x with comparable specs and paying the difference between the two?

I can almost guarantee you that you will not get an alienware 15. First, they now have XPS 17 that has i7 processor...so they will just replace yours with that or the XPS 15 with i7. The only thing you can hold them in the water is if you have the RGB LED Screen. Otherwise, it is very hard to persuade them for an alienware. Also, you must tell them that the 1647 is a downgrade(apparently) because it has i5 but yours has i7....Either way, they will end up giving you either XPS 15 or XPS 17 with i7

Oh, I already told them I won't take a 1647. I paid for and wanted the i7 and won't settle for an i5.

I totally understand not getting an Alienware for nothing but even if I were to pay for it? The system configured comparatively to mine would cost 2k. I paid $1,552.93 for my 1645. I would happily pay the difference plus a little more to get the system I had wanted in the first place.

I just don't see how that could NOT be possible. At least that way they'd get more money out of me as opposed to them technically losing money by providing me with a new XPS 17. The XPS 17, by the way, is something I really don't want. My SXPS 16 was a little on the big side and I don't think I'd want to go bigger.

One way you could get AW is ask for full refund.

Make a list of things that are not there in xps 15 or you dont like in the current xps series. Say them you dont like the looks of the new xps series (which is personally dont like). Also the FHD screen is currently unavailable in US. Just dont settle for replacement.

They would have no option but to give you a full refund as they are offering you a laptop which is not the same that you have currently (xps 15 as against 1645). After getting full refund you can buy the new AW yourself.
