Very basic question, I know, but I can't find a direct answer anywhere. I NEED two, but would prefer three. It's not a huge deal, really, but I noticed when looking over my final system specifications it doesn't tell me about the ports at all.

    How many ports are there?

    Very funny. ;-P

Oh well, everything is moot now, I have officially ordered and now just have to cross my fingers that it arrives and works in a few weeks from now.

I haven't had a laptop since something like August and that laptop was ancient. My father had built it for me for school purposes to basically do nothing other then run word-processing programs. It had a 20GB hard drive, 466mhz processor, and maybe 256mb RAM. It ran Win98.

The desktop I'm using right now is running XP Pro, has an 80GB HD, and I forget the processor speed. It's above 2.5ghz I believe.

I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on this XPS - basically, it'll be the most technologically advanced system I've ever had!

Warning! You may not have 3 usable USB ports depending on what you are plugging in.

The two ports on the left are directly beside the power plug. If you want to plug in anything wider than a USB port, you will probably be out of luck.

The port on the right is directly below the CD slot.

Printer w/normal size USB, jumpdrive, and mouse. All at varying times. When on the go the only thing I'll need it for is perhaps the jumpdrive because when on the go I'll just use the built-in touchpad.

My Inspiron had 4 USB ports (2 on back, 2 on right side) and with my LED crane light and USB key in the back, I still had room for a mouse and whatnot. I don't like all the ports on the side (can't sit with lappy in my lap while cross-legged) like the MacBooks.

If you have Bluetooth, get a BT wireless mouse. I picked up an OEM Microsoft Bluetooth Wireless Mouse 5000 for $30 from Microcenter. (Usually $50 in retail package.) That will free up a port.

That's a great idea. I'll probably do that in order to free up a port then. I do have bluetooth - or rather, I will have it.

It does. It's the same set up on the Inspiron 1420, and you usually won't notice it.

However, if it becomes too much of an issue, you could get an external USB soundcard and hook up the speakers to that.

Yeah I would get BT for that reason and I think that is the reason why they only put 3 USB ports on it.

It is below the DVD slot, but on the very back edge of the slot as you face the laptop. NOT a problem at all..........

No, you just need earbuds/headphones. Check the binder that came with it for the nice Creative buds that are included.

Where the heck would you put a PCI card in a LAPTOP?!?!?
