    Hi guys!

I'm planning on connecting my laptop to an external screen to work on 2 displays at the same time.

The output of the XPS 17 is only a HDMI one and the input of the screen is only a VGA input.

Is their a specific converter from HDMI --> VGA?
I found one on Amazon, but the description told me that I wasn't compatible with a beamer/laptop (weird, but anyway).

So is their a solution to connect to the screen or is this a possible fix?
Laptop (HDMI) --> HDMI to DVI converter --> DVI to VGA converter ---> Screen (VGA)

It would be awesome if somebody could provide me soms information/link to buy.

And will I have sound or do I have to use another cable for that?

    Thanks!

You typically need to get a converter box (not just cable) for a VGA(analog) to HDMI(digital) connection.

You'll want to use the mini Displayport, not HDMI, for a VGA connection.
With HDMI, you'll need to use a converter box to actively convert HDMI's digital signal into VGA's analog.

With mini Displayport, you can use this cable. From what I understand, displayport->vga is also an active conversion, but it can be done with a smaller chip that can fit in the cable. Here's Dell's "official" minidisplayport->VGA cable as well. I'm not entirely confident about the monoprice cable since it appears to be meant for macs (though I'd think the signals and conversion should be the same?), but the Dell cable should be fine.

I use the Monoprice one with a XPS 15 and XPS 13, works great.
