I am trying to clone the HDD of my new Dell XPS l502x which is a 1.0TB WD10JPVT

The destination disk is exactly the same 1.0TB WD10JPVT

The new drive which is connected by USB has been formatted using Win7 Disk Management.
My usual disk cloning program is HDClone but this is returning an error message that states
“Copying drives with different block sizes is not supported”

I have downloaded Acronis True Image WD and have tried using it to add disk, format disk and using the original windows format but when I try to clone the disk it will not let me select the USB disk even though it lists it and it can be accessed in windows.

Has anyone a solution to this frustrating problem

    Hi,
I had to go through the same problem as you, due to the laptop repair and I had to backup the hdd to other hdd (500Gb).
I tried to clone it with Acronis and had the same issue. I gave up and used the Windows 7 system image, very easy to use and effective.
When the laptop came I restored all my data back without any issue. It worked 100%, but it took a few good hours (around 6 hours), is normal byte by byte!
I will never use third party software for backup but the one is provided by windows.

I had trouble to clone my 500GB to a new 750GB HDD. I tried with Norton Ghost twice but both times I got an error after several hours. Tested HD Clone, but it did not work. Then I found the Seagate Disc Wizard, available on their website and it worked fine. Very simple program that clone the drive straight off.

Are you connecting the USB drive through a USB 3.0 port (blue)? Those don't always work with peripherals outside of Windows (which is how most cloning programs operate). Try using the USB 2.0 port and see.
