I've had my XPS L702x for a few months now and before EOFY Dell had a sale on monitors so I got a U2711. So far the monitor is fine, however I cant watch DVD/BR on it, no matter what app I use. It gives me errors about HDCP.

I had this problem with the default Windows 7 Home install, I've now installed Win7 Pro, updated Video drivers & installed DVD replay SW. I still get the same error. I've tried it over HDMI-HDMI & DVI-HDMI, I'm yet to try it over DisplayPort. Can anyone explain why this is happening? The U2711 specs state it's HDCP,

    • Myriad of connectivity options: HDMI, DisplayPort with audio, DVI-D (HDCP), USB and VGA ports.
    • High-Definition Capability:
Enjoy high-performance audio and video quality with HDMI 1.3, DisplayPort and DVI-D digital connector with high-bandwidth Digital Copy Protection (HDCP) Ready.

Before this screen I had a Samsung 245T and it worked perfectly playing HDCP content. What simple thing am I missing?

EDIT: Sorry will add that I've got the 3D screen, 8GB ram.

Have you tried just making the U2711 as the main screen.
    Do not Clone or Extend.

I had an HP DV7T-6100 and it worked just fine with my Dell ST2410 via HDMI playing Blu Ray movies. Not so with my XPS, I get the HDCP error when I try to play movies. I know for a fact my monitor is HDCP compliant. Kind of ticking me off too.

Well I spoke to Dell support briefly the other day, they said to upgrade the video drivers. I've done that. I might look at using the nVidia drivers ...

OK Dell, we have a problem here. I have connected a DELL product that says its HDCP compliant, into a Dell Laptop. Why then does the nVidia tool say "Your display does not support HDCP" ??? You'll be getting a call from me this week, very pissed off right now.

EDIT: Currently have a Dell person connected to my latop taking a look. Will update what happens.

Dell person said the monitor only supports HDCP over DVI-D. So I've had to purchase a DVI-D to HDMI connector. Now I do kinda feel a bit stupid, but why wasnt the HDCP for all connectors? If this cable doesnt work the monitor will be useless for what I mostly bought it for :(

The DVI-D is required over normal DVI to get the higher resolution. However that doesn't explain why HDMI didn't work...I suspect your tech is a typical half-trained Dell tech...

Good luck. DVI-D ought to work but still...

It doesn't work..lol I have an HDMI to DVI-D adapter and it still says it's not HDCP compliant. I tired 3 different HDMI cables with the DVI-D adapter and it still said the monitor is not HDCP compliant. Thinking of trying a mini display port to dvi cable as a last resort. Dell tech was clueless....he ran the graphics card troubleshooter and that was it...said everything had to be HDCP compliant..blah blah...freakin useless. I could understand if it didn't work with my HP DV7T but it played blu-ray movies flawlessly on my Dell monitor. Beginning to believe it's the GPU.

What monitor are you using? The one in your sig, ST2410?

My problem is not the laptop, I plugged the laptop into an old 24" Samsung 245T and the BR worked. I tried it into the HDMI and the DVI of the Samsung and also the nVidia control panel said I had a HDCP compliant display and graphics card. I may have someone lined up to buy the monitor at the price I paid, as I got a discount before EOFY.

Yup and the HP DV7T played bluray movies just fine on it with no HDCP problems. I know my monitor is HDCP compliant because it says it is via DVI and it worked with my HP. Nothing has changed except the XPS. I really don't care in that I just watch blu ray movies on my 46" LED but sometimes I like to fire one up when I'm doing something on the laptop. If the mini display port to DVI cable doesn't work I just won't worry about it anymore. Just wish I knew why it worked on the HP and not on the XPS.

Well whenever I do sell it, I wont be buying another Dell Monitor. Such a simple task of connecting and playing a BR yet it's turned into a blood bath :(

Just to add to my saga with this monitor ... So HDMI and DVI wont let me play BR movies from my Dell XPS laptop. So I thought I need to try DisplayPort. My XPS only had a mini DisplayPort connector, mini to full size DisplayPort cables must be the rarest cable I've ever gone looking for.

Anyway I find one and connect it up and it works, great I can now watch BR movies. So I watched Foo Fighters on it one night, turned laptop and monitor off. Next day, turn everything back on and the monitor stayed in sleep mode ... I thought hhhmmm thats odd. Tried lots of things, nothing would wake it. The only option I found was I had to pull the power & DP cables, wait for monitor lights to go off, put power back, put DP back and it would all reconnect. Dell send me a refurb'd monitor to try and fix it, same problem. The refurbished monitor has been picked up and I'm now waiting for my refund.

I've reconnected my old 24" Samsung 245T with DVI-HDMI and can play whatever content I want. Damm you Dell

Has anyone had any success with HDCP and a Dell XPS L702x?
Recently got one. Great machine apart from this issue.
I can use minidisplay port and use a mini display to dvi and dvi to hdmi cable and connect the XPS to my HD Tv and play a blu ray. But I get no audio.
I can rip the Blu Ray to my drive, mount the ISO and play it that way via HDMI, getting both Video and Audio because in that situation the HDCP's not used.
But I can't just pop in a blu ray and get it to play via HDMI because the HDCP isn't detected correctly. There were 3 instances when HDCP was detected after plugging in the HDMI cable, but the moment I changed my display settings, it stopped working.

I have a case open with Dell support, but I don't have any hope that it'll get anywhere.

    Thanks

I dont believe the problem is with the laptop. I'm still running the same laptop and have been using my 24" Samsung 245T since October last year.

Are you trying to send sound to your TV?

Yes, I'm trying to send sound. Specifically, I'm trying to play a blu ray. Otherwise, it work perfectly fine. If I try to play a blu ray disc, I get the HDCP error. But I can use HDMI for every other purpose.

hey FL00DY, a few suggestions if you haven't tried this.

Under Nvidia control panel, set phys-x to Auto-Select (just in case).

When opening the program to play the movie, right click the icon and try "run with graphics processor". Try it with both graphics processors and see if any of them prevails over the other when watching the BR/DVD. If it doesn't work or it's already been done/someone's said it, i'm sorry as I had a few minutes to spare and look around the forums as a study break :)

Try looking into something like AnyDVD from Slysoft and see if that might be an option for you
