So I spent last night reinstalling my OS and transferring all my files over.

My first impression... WOW! This display is amazing! Super bright! In fact, maybe too much. A tad saturated, too. Side by side, my M1530 looks dull and bland.

Interestingly, the M1530 with Vista Ultimate (32-bit) boots up a little faster than the 1640.

One thing that bothers me is that they switched the side that the AC adapter plugs in... from the left side on the M1530 to the right side on the 1640. And the power cord has a blue light on the tip that never turns off. It bothered me last night when I was trying to sleep.

I'm loving the backlit keyboard. Didn't think I'd care for it but it is surprisingly useful. Speakers are much better than the M1530, too.

But it does get hot. About the same as my M1530, I suppose. I do lay it on my lap while I'm on my couch, so it gets warm! Will be getting the 9-cell battery so that It will not sit flush on my lap.

Think I'd rather have the black cover instead the red, but overall, I like. :D

Congrat's to you! :D It's so great that you are really enjoying it! :)

And, you got the red!

Do you mind posting a picture of your lappy? I don't think anyone has seen a member's picture of the 1640 in Red! ;)

    Cin ;) :)

The odd thing is that I have no idea how accurate those pics are for you guys. Using this laptop with this LED screen the colors are super bright.

It's a pretty color but I agree... not sure if I like it on a laptop.

Great pics! Although I always hesitate to get a laptop which has exotic colors like red. Maybe I should try one day...

If you don't mind, I got some questions. How do you like the screen resolution? And how's the fan activity, can you always hear it?

The screen resolution was a bit of a surprise. The M1530 was 1680 x 1050, which is not as widescreen as the 1640, which is 1920 x 1080. It is not as high but longer. So I don't maximize my browser now.

I don't watch movies much on my laptop, but I bet this is a much better screen for that.

Yes, the fan is on and I can always hear it. It's more of a subtle hum, but it may run less fast with the 9-cell battery which gives better ventilation.

hehe... I used my nice camera... Canon 40D. I had to use a tripod because with the flash the colors were washed out. The laptop cover is highly reflective.

I'm too manly for the red. The black looks more my style.

That red laptop is quite nice. At least, fingerprints are less visible.

And talking about red, I don't know but it seems rather easy to fix the red saturation that exists out of the box. Just adjust it using the ATI control panel. That's what I did (along with other color changes) and now I'm very satisfied with the colors.

Go into your ATI properties and lower the saturation level to around 75 - 80, and you'll be much happier with the color... Red in particular won't appear so brightly highlighted.

Nice red SXPS, but I prefer the black, it looks more natural. I think i'd like the red better if they left off the red leather accent, and just left it red plastic.

Yes, I will definitely work on the saturation levels. Didn't even think about the ATI properties.

My other laptop is the M1530 with the blue cover. And I really like it. It has a matte, tacky surface. Quite masculine. This merlot red is a tad loud for my taste.

    Oh well. Live and learn.

In the picture, the blue light on the connector of the power cord does look brighter than mine.

Yeah, it isn't THAT bright but in a perfectly dark room the damn thing lights up the whole room. I threw my sock over it last night to hide it. I'll need to find a better way to turn that light off, without being ghetto... like using electrical tape. :p

I was going to say...I have 2, 1 for 1420(personal) and 1 for D620(work). Best laptop mouse ever.

I love the RED as well. I like small laptop, but the power of XPS 16 makes me want to have 1 to replace my 1420. Too many things I want to get...choices choices...and the Palm Pre!

It really is. I bought it because of the small USB dongle thingie. I leave it in my laptop at all times. But it's a very accurate mouse. I like the "weight" of the scroll wheel.

I am not sure because I like the 1080 resolution. I can't stand low resolution screens since I like to put a few things on the screen and see all of them at the same time. I will wait and see.

The Leather "trim" is not pink at all. I think it has to do with the "lighting" effect. In some of the pic's I took of mine when received...it gave off a "pinkish" tone. It is a "red" and it is a lovely color! ;)

Beautiful laptop pics. Kinda makes me wish I had that color instead of mine (fingerprint black).
