I was encoding an 8-minute video using Premiere cs4 and my m1330 turns itself off because the GPU temp had reached 200 degree F.

I am using Windows 7 beta and latest nvidia drivers.

Has anyone been able to encode a long HD video to H.264 without it turning off after 10 minutes or so?

Computer users use celcius for temperatures as it creates a standard. 200* F meant nothing to me until i converted it. It comes to be 93*C which is hot yes. Do you have a cooling mat under it?

Yes, I used a usb cooling pad but it didn't help. Any good pad you can recommend?

I am considering the copper mod.

I doubt your GPU getting to 93c was the cause.

Before I did the copper mod, my GPU used to get up to 105c! I'd then downclock itself to cool down.

Have you cleaned your cooling system, i.e. removed the dust from out of the vents?

I suspect heat build-up has triggered something to shut the system down with high temps, so that's the first thing to check.

buy a cooling which, blows the air directly into the air vent and also hdd.

ok so i think that the design is a bit weird. i mean other comps out there don't get as hot. but the heat can be fixed with various tools so for me its kind of a non issue.

isn't that being a bit counter productive? The way the computer notebook fans work is they blow air out of the vents, so blowing air into the vents would just create a bunch of conflicting air and cause the notebook to get hotter?

93 C wouldn't force a shutdown.. It's probably some other cause.. Try monitoring the CPU temps.. and RAM usage..

    Hi!

The GPU is not directly affected when you encode H264 video. I doubt Premiere is using the GPU for some of the encodings.

If your GPU overheads, at some point it clocks down. This successfully lowers the temperature. No need for the computer to shut down. The GPU will eventually clock up again.

You could invest money and time in all these things like coolers, and mods, but I'd rather get the extended warranty (which is a good thing anyway, and a bargain) for the time I want to use the computer (3 to 4 years), and relax. The moment something breaks I'll let someone from Dell come over.

    Cheers

Just an update. I opened the case and blew all the dust out. It seems the notebook doesn't shut itself off. However, the unit is extremely hot while encoding premiere video to h264. Any recommendation? It is still under warranty.

90C for a CPU is hot. Extremely hot. My guess would be that's what's prompting the shutdown.

i get similar temps when stressing the cpu... and dell will change my motherboard and cpu tomorrow :D i suggest you call dell and tell them you are getting random shutdowns and your CPU is BURNING HOT!!!
