Why does Dell force the sale of Windows 7 with the XPS 16? This "high powered" laptop can't maintain the 1GHz CPU requirement to run Windows 7. By comparison, your average 6 year old laptop meets this low CPU requirement 100% of the time.

My CPU was running at ~800MHz playing Left 4 Dead 1. One single real world application. Tell Dell if you're having problems like me, there is a chance they will listen. XPS 1645 A09 BIOS: CPU Throttling - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

SpeedStep is responsible for that ... It downclocks the CPU when it's not being stressed. Run a CPU benchmark and see your multiplier and clock speed go up.

I believe he had posted TS logs on the matter. Im not sure if he did the prime95 + furmark combo. I do know thta I see a 7 multiplier while gaming and multitasking but thats just due to a core not being needed at the time. When I do synthetic it pegs at or very near 12. Gpig is just one of the unlucky ones with throttling issues. :(

Oh hmm weird ... Dunno why I never had the low multiplier problem ... When I stress a single CPU it goes up to 3.06 GHz

Well mine doesnt go that high as I have a 720QM, but I see the same thing. When doing real world tasks everyone will see multipliers below 12 and 13 in their 720/820 CPUs. Its just when they are at full tilt and well below those multipliers that people should worry.

Well I am also one of the unlucky ones who has had especially bad problems with throttling on my 1645...which is finally going to be replaced, I'm just in the waiting game at this point.

I had the exact same problems with Left 4 Dead (1) as "gpig", generally within 5-15 mins it will start to throttle, until the multiplier is locked down at 7.00 (on ALL cores), which makes it unplayable, until a restart. This same game I could play without problems on my old E1505 w/a 256mb graphics card for hours without problems, yes it would get hot, but never problems like this.

Yeah me too... because they ALL are plagued with the throttling issue... Come on, are we still thinking its just some?!

I'd like to see one person run a stress test for 20-30 mins and not have throttling.. @ least on a 1645........ Anyone??

I am also convinced they are all (i7 quad + 4670) plagued with the throttling issue. All the systems can throttle, there are just some factors that make some slightly more likely to do so than others under slightly varying degrees of usage. That's why I can't call Dell and complain, they will just replace the motherboard and it will be a huge waste of time.
