    Hi All..

I'm new here and hope anybody can help..

I got mine XPS m1330 in april.. Didn't like Vista because I felt that I didn't have control over my computer with all that superadmin etc and it being slow.. So I installed XP a couple days ago.. But now I've been used to Vista and didn't like XP, so I switched back to Vista.. Much faster this time around without all of that preinstalled software for now...

    Now I have two issues..

First issue is the fan works constantly and sometimes is stops for one second and runs for one second and does that all the time, it is driving me crazy.. By the way, the laptop is not warm at all..

The second issue is that I had to switch SATA HDD in bios to ATA from ACHI(?) and disable something in BIOS which I don't remember the name now before I could change to ATA. Now if I try to enable that "thing" and switch to ACHI from ATA, Vista doesn't boot..
Is it a problem that it is running in ATA or it doen't matter?

    Thanks in advance

Do you have the nvidia 8400 video card and are you using the latest driver? If you are that could very well be the culprit. I had updated to the latest driver and the fan on my M1330 was constant and loud...I reverted to the earlier driver and now all is back to normal.

    Thanks a lot.

Yes I have nvidia 8400 and used the driver from dells homepage, which must be the latest one. Didn't use the one that came with the laptop on a CD. Should install that one instead and how do I uninstall a driver?

Sorry if I'm asking to many question but I'm not that much into computers other than using one..

Go to your control panel and remove the drivers through the REMOVE PROGRAMS utility. restart. install driver that you downloaded previously from wherever that appears to be - the PROPER driver. restart. let finish installing. relax.

You don't have to use the one from the disc. If you go to dell.com, support and put in M1330 go to the video driver, you can choose drivers previous to the latest version. The version I'm using which is working without a hitch is from 10/4/2007 version: 7.15.11.5669

I should tell you that I'm running BIOS version A10. If you're running version A12 or higher, that might also be the problem. I've read that the fan runs more often w/ version A12 but I haven't read thatit is especially loud. The driver definitely was the problem for me so it's at least worth a shot. Hope it helps.

Just a guess, what is your cpu and gpu temperature. Use HWMonitor to see correct temperatures. Your laptop exhaust should be warm if the heatpipe is hooked up correctly. If the exhaust is cold, the gpu/cpu is not dumping heat to the heatsink, which will cause the fan to run all the time.

gpu is 57 and cpu 48...

HEP! said to me that maybe a copper shim got loose... if you have the coppermod that could be...
same for me, but the laptop did not move, so that could not cause anything for me...

and maybe it is the bios.. ill try a lower one

a10 is making it go low, high, low, high, low, high.....

so im going back to a12

    EDIT: ima try a13

EDIT 2: dell's site is being updated i guess. so i cant download it i guess...
EDIT: a09 = full blast all the time
EDIT: every thing but a12 makes it run on full blast all the time for me.....
EDIT: speedfan does not let me touch the fan.. im gona try riva tuner
EDIT: nope, riva tuner does do it either
EDIT: my heatsink is totally intact and working...
and im on battery now too... so idk... everything is downclocked now too...

and the fan is taking a toll on my battery life, i usually get about 3:50 on battery, now im gettting 3:10

    Ok...
    more info...

So... it appears that the fan is always one notch up from what it normally should be... idk if that helps... but yea.. there it is.

EDIT: ok... so... for me.. i also have the harddrive always going...

Well for me now I have tried to install the driver from the CD that came with.. I have now been working for about an hour with the new driver and it seems to be working.. The fan is running very slowly and I can barely hear it.. And the laptop is warm at all.

    Thanks again..
