So I'm getting a system replacement for my 1645, and I'm considering extending my Warranty and the complete care coverage. I have two questions however.

    1. Since the system replacement is kind of like me getting a new computer which may or may not have issues of its own does it come with any sort of warranty besides the one I already have? (which expires in 38 days)

    2. How much is it to extend the warranty and complete care? I went to the dell site and its saying it'll cost me close to $400 to extend the warranty and complete care by just one year, which is almost double what I paid in the first place for 2 years of coverage, is that normal?

    1) In general, yes, the warranty for the replacement is the same as the original warranty. I'm sure if it died a day out of warranty and you kick and screamed enough, they'd make an exception, but in general, such probably isn't the case.

    2) Seems a bit high for sure, but then again you're extending the standard warranty AND Complete Care for a fairly old machine... what does it cost just to extend the standard warranty?

    Thanks for the response.

Well it does seem really high, and my 1645 is only two years old but I guess in tech years that is old, but what I really want is that coverage for what would be the brand new system replacement I'm getting so if age of the machine is a factor would it be less if I waited and tried to apply that to the new machine? Actually adding the complete care was only + $69 The price on just the warranty was almost 400! That's almost the cost of an entire low-end system.

They probably have a high number of warranty claims when people extend for another year, and they still want to turn a profit on it.

I think it's crazy to buy it. If your hard drive dies, or you motherboard or whatever, just replace it yourself. And that's IF it does. Warranties don't exist because it saves the average consumer money. Quite the opposite.

Well it depends really. I'm sure on my warranty which was 2 yrs + accidental I think I paid ~200-250 for that, and over the course of my warranty I had 3 monitor replacements (so that's already far more than the cost) b/c I had the 1080p RGBLED display, I've had 2 heatsink replacements, 2 mobo replacements, and had my palm rest exchanged, and had my blu-ray burner replaced. So to me it more than paid for itself, and if I'd had to do all those repairs myself I'd be screwed. I think on a desktop system it's not really worth it to have, because issues are less frequent, and repairs are more user friendly, but on a laptop it's nice to have that peace of mind. Especially when it's your primary system.
