Currently, I have a Dell XPS M1730 with a Core 2 Duo 2.1 Ghz with 1920x1200, Dual Nvidia GeForce 8700M-GT SLI, 500 GB HDD, 4 GB RAM.

The video card broke and is in a repair depot but on back order. Dell offered to exchange my computer with a new one. I would get either the XPS M1640 or the Studio 17 if I decide to exchange, with same or better specs as my current laptop. What should I do?

An exchange is what you should get, but tell the rep that neither of the systems they offered is SLi capable. Tell them you want a M17x because you have an SLi capable system. I just had a similar 8700GT SLI M1730 replaced with an Alienware M17x with a GTX260 SLi card.

That's a really good point at about the SLI, I hadn't thought of that. Definitely wouldn't mind an Alienware either. We'll see what they say when they call back in a couple hours.

Did you also have the Ageia Physx card? If you do, this is also a very good point to bring up because neither the SXPS16 or Studio 17 will have better graphics performance that your current M1730. In the end, you got a high end gaming system, while the 2 choices they provided are mainstream multimedia systems that cannot be compared.

Haha, that's what I'm trying to do. I went to 2nd Level Support since the video cards are delayed from Nvidia to repair and they estimate I won't get back my computer until October 11th, exactly a month without my laptop.

The 2nd Level Support rep is being very helpful. He offered the system exchange for the other two systems but understood that I did not want them because they are not as good.

I just emailed him showing my original purchase price of $2518.51, but that was an e1705, which ended up being exchanged for the M1730 through a repair. He offered a couple different things, one of which would be a purchase of the Alienware highly discounted.

We'll see what happens! Luckily, I have my Gateway 11.6" netbook that I love and have been using ever since.
