So i was using an emulator to play some old PSX games on my XPS M1530. I have a 2.4ghz C2D , 4gb ram, and a 8600gt. When i finished i checked my temps on my card just cause i was surious and it was at 93C (199F) when i checked. That seems really high to me. I dont know if the fan is not kicking on or if the emulator is pushing my card to hard because i have never seen these kinds of temps before even after long Guild Wars sessions or any other of the number of games i play on this. Oh btw the card is not overclocked. Anything else you need let me know.

emulators always needs loads of overhead because they're inefficient. still, 99°C is too hot and will shorten the lifespan of your GPU. under no circumstances should such temperatures be reached. perhaps you might want to invest in an external cooler. also, cleaning out your vents might be a good idea.

There is something weird because psx emulator don't need a powerful gpu, I could play without any problem with a duron 1.22 and a crappy tnt2... Does it reach those kind of temperatures if you run 3dmark or furmark in stress testing mode?

I just ran RTHDRIBL for a while and it was again reaching over 90C. Ill try cleaning out the vents and see if that helps is there any way i can do it without canned air because i want to try to clean it tonight and i wont be able to get to the store until tomorow.

The thing about PSX is that it will use both your CPU and GPU , unlike other games that focus more on the GPU alone,

so a rise in temps is sure to happen in comparison to normal games, but as they said above , 93C is too much, and can damage your GPU, you should call dell to have your motherboard replaced.

    Best of luck!

you think that is defective and not just dirty? If they replace my motherboard will I lose my hard drive cause i have a lot of stuff for school on there which would be a pain to get back.

the most i got was 82C when running KH2 on PSX, so there is something wrong there, you could try and blow compressed air into the vents and see if that helps, and if it doesn't then dell should replace your motherboard, this will not affect any of your files, since they will be safe in your HD, the only things they will replace is the Motherboard witch is soldered into the GPU.

Well i just talked to Dell. They are sending me a new heat sink and fan setup. I am going to have to put in my self because i am in college and they aren't able to come to my dorm. Is it hard to replace? they said it would not void my warranty is that true? and i put some arctic silver instead of what ever compound they give me will that void the warranty? the dell guy said no but i don't know if he fully understood me.

Well i feel dumb, i just blew the dust out for the hell of it. It didnt seem bad when i looked in so i figured it was something else. Should i call dell and cancel the heatsink or throw the new one on for fun.

heheh.... welll.... i would recommend you do accept the replacement, since, even with dust, 92C seems too high.

replacing the MB takes about half hour, and you will need to take your notebook apart and unscrew almost everything, but if you follow the guide in dell's site it shouldn't be a problem, and putting AS5 in wont void your warranty.

I just opened up HWMonitor for fun only to see that my GPU was idling at 73C =O. The wierd part is after running RTHDRIBL the temps didnt go over 78C under load so i am a little confused right now.

RTHDRIBL wont really stress your laptop, open up a game, and play for more than an hour, and you will get the REAL temps lol.

and for the heatsink replacement, you simply need to remove the one you have by unscrewing the 7 screws holding it to the mainboard, cleaning out the old thermal crud, apply AS5 in a small rice-seized ammount, and spreading it with your finger inside a plastic bag, then mount your new heatsink, tighten the screws ( make sure they have a little pressure ) reconnect the cable, and voila!

Yeah i just checked temps again when i woke up thinking maybe it was just random but my temps this morning were at 75C, I do not have screensaver on this computer, and the fan is working properly, (im in a dorm room so the computer is right next to where i sleep) I hear the fan switching on and off throughout the night.
