I've got a small dust speck behind the LCD pane on my new Dell SXPS 1340, so no amount of rubbing is going to help.

I've contacted Dell, and after a not so short in time yet short in number set of emails, they told me that my LCD screen isn't in a condition to warrant a replacement.

Fine, I don't need it replaced; I just want the spec out of there.

But the mail was regarding a possible dead pixel SLASH dust speck, and the reply mentioned that with regards to dust, I need to contact them again, and take some better quality pictures.

Problem: my camera is really, really bad. Especially for this sort of thing. It relies on auto-focus, and capturing evidence any better than what I've already sent is next to impossible.

So, aside from getting a better camera, does anyone know if Dell really DOES clean such things and will they do it for one spec, or will they say "it doesn't warrant blah blah blah"?

Alternatively, I could clean it myself, if I knew how to take that LCD pane off...

well you can basically make your way exaggerating a bit, ive had to do this sometimes because they just refuse to accept its a faulty part.... quite annoying really....

i think they will actually pay attention if you say you have more than 4 dead pixels... or that you screen has dots everywhere, and you cant use it this way.

best of luck! and with dell tech its a hit or miss, if you fail, keep trying, you have every right to keep asking and keep calling, you paid for your product, and if its not perfect its dell's problem, not yours!

How long have you had it? If you are within your 21 days of date of invoice..you have full right to return for a refund or replacement for a new lappy.

And, Tech Support should be working with you vs. against you on this..bah... :(

Well, I'm in Poland, so... this isn't the nice US and usually the customer is the enemy (so I have to prove that there indeed IS a speck of dust by, apparently, taking pictures). As such, I'm not 100% sure such laws apply. (Feel free to use this example in any future jokes about Poland ;) )

I have the laptop since last Thursday. Anyway, I'll call them tomorrow; hope I can battle it out.

EDIT: I guess I should have set a region flag for the topic, eh? Sorry... :(

    EDIT 2:
I don't know if this is relevant... could be. When I got the laptop, something bugged me, but since I couldn't verify it and it's in no way preventing me from using the laptop, I let it slip my mind for the time being.

The LCD pane seems to... stick out a bit, being sharp around the edges. Specifically at the bottom of the LCD cover, where the aluminium-like hinges are, it's definitely sticking out, while at the top it's a lot more smooth. This whole thing gives the slight illusion that the pane hasn't been properly glued / attached at the bottom.

Since I don't have access to another laptop of this kind, I can't tell if this is OK or not. Needless to say, if it's not right, I guess I could use this as an argument to pester them some more into replacing the LCD screen.

Forgive me for this shameless bump, but could someone comment on how the LCD pane looks like?

I mean, is it normal for it to seem slightly sticking out like that at the bottom?

    Hi there,

I have the EXACT SAME problem as you. I had one spec which looks like a mark just underneath the screen. I tried cleaning it and kept on cleaning the screen hoping it goes away. But it is actually just under the screen im cleaning and in between the screen and the actual LCD. Somehow I think there is a gap somewhere and the particles are getting inside.

Anyway, just ring Dell tell them your screen does not turn on anymore. They will try and get you to do some tests just tell them its not turning on and you will have a technician come by with a new LCD. If he asks why the screen works, tell him it is an intermittent problem and to replace the screen.
