I saw the video review of this laptop and when the guy turned it on the optical drive made this super loud grinding noise. I know that sound is normal when you put a disc into a slot loading drive but does it make that sound even when you just turn the computer on?

the BIOS is probably testing the optical drive
u can reduce the sound by putting in a dummy disc, the sound wont be so loud -
It happens for me, but it's just a little buzz that less than 2 seconds. Not a big deal.
There might be a BIOS option to disable the drive check on the POST which could fix the problem. -
It sounds pretty loud when heard in a lecture course. I had a Macbook Pro and I stupidly put in a DVD during a boring class.
What if the computer is waking from sleep. Any sound then? -
Sleep I am not sure, I use hibernate, which of course has the sound as coming out of hibernation includes a POST.
Since coming out a sleep doesn't, it probably doesn't do it. -
The latest BIOS (A10) stops the laptop making any noise when booting up if there isn't a disk in the drive. -
My M1330 still makes *click* *click* sounds when it is woken from sleep. I have A10 installed.

I suspect the optical drive is of low quality. Other slot drives I've seen are pretty quiet.

When he boots it up around a minute 10 seconds into the video?
Mine makes a similar noise. I'm on my third M1330 and they've all made that noise when they boot, and when you put a CD in them.
Does the m1330 optical drive make a loud noise when turned on?
