I am hearing very mixed things about this. It is very clear now that optimus does not operate on the XPS 17 3D, but does intel's WiDi work?

Also, how much battery life can be expected on the XPS 17 3D with a 6 cell battery?

hate to be bumping as the first reply on this thread but is the reason there are no answers here because no one can know this until they get their hands on a unit or am i missing something?

The widi will not work. It's a feature of the integrated graphics in the processor and those integrated graphics get physically bypassed in the 3D configuration.

Any features which are specific to those integrated graphics (WiDi and Optimus) won't work because it's not physically enabled.

Like craigallen said, widi and optimus don't work with 3d due to being bypassed physically

If you buy an XPS 3D and you need something like widi though, you can buy a USB attachment called HP tv wireless connect: HP Wireless TV Connect with WHDI | HP® Official Store

HP charges $200, but you can get it on ebay for around $100

It makes so little sense for Dell not to make a 1080p LCD without 3D available. Really! How many people are actually going to use the 3D feature? 2? :)

couldn't agree more. i talked to a chat rep yesterday who tried to tell me it was impossible to make a laptop with 1080p that wasn't 3D due to current technology.

it was like talking to someone who was sure the world was flat..

Yup; word has it that Nvidia is desperate to move some 3D products, hence the bundling. It would've been amazing if they could've given the XPS 17 the kind of option for a B+RG 1080p like they did for the XPS 15

If anyone's been following along with 3D tv's, it's pretty much been a bust - the industry thought 3D would be the next plasma/1080p wave, but it turns out not many people see the advantage to tossing out their plasma's and getting a new $$$ TV with such limited content, so it seems the 3D industry has to resort to BS like bundling to get their crap out the door.

Considering that they already sell the XPS 15 with 1080p display w/o 3D, you'd think they'd know better :p

Like someone above speculated, I bet they're trying to bump their 3D sales by forcing the situation on their XPS 17s.

    Actually I just bought xps 17 1080p without 3D

In australia for some reason we get this option so I get optimus but also only 2 dimms..this is unusual for this country we usually miss out but this has been a big for issue for many people ..

I find the situation a little strange I have been nervous about getting the system..will find out when it arrives
